The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers welcomes the decision by the International Union of Operating Engineers to formally re-affiliate with the Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO.

“This is good news for all union construction workers,” said International President Edwin D. Hill. “We all face common challenges: growing our movement, raising industry standards and showing to customers and clients that skilled, union labor is the way to go in today’s economy. The IBEW welcomes the brothers and sisters at the Operating Engineers back to the Building Trades.”

The IUOE represents more than 400,000 heavy equipment operators, mechanics, surveyors, and stationary engineers across North America. The union left the building trades in 2006.

“Raising our collective voice and acting with common purpose through this affiliation will benefit not only IUOE members, but all union construction tradesmen and women throughout the U.S. and Canada,” said IUOE General President James Callahan.

The affiliation is effective Jan. 1, 2014.

“With the Operating Engineers as a formal partner, we will better serve the needs of our clients, our customers, our contractors and, most importantly, the members we represent,” said Building Trades President Sean McGarvey.
