Nelson Tree Organized

Local 1525 Bus. Mgr. Glen Petznick (left),
Vice Chmn. Rick Jenkins, Chmn. Patrick
Conway and Rec. Sec. Michael Elliott.

L.U. 1525 (lctt&o), OMAHA, NEIn September 2003, Nelson Tree Service Inc. was awarded the line clearance tree-trimming contract for Omaha Public Power District. Nelson Tree came in as a non-union contractor. In December 2003 the company signed a voluntary recognition agreement with Local 1525 as the bargaining agent for Nelson employees. After six long months of contract negotiations, the local membership ratified an agreement. Many long, hard hours were put in by Bros. Patrick Conway, Lucas Miller and Michael Elliott to reach an agreement. Local 1525 also extends a big thank-you to Mike Muenks, Eleventh District outside organizer, for his many hours of hard work.

The newly re-formed Line Clearance Unit elected Patrick Conway as chairman, Rick Jenkins as vice-chairman and Michael Elliott as recording secretary.

In July the lineman ratified new contracts for our overhead power and street lighting/traffic signal agreements. At the time of this writing work was slow, but was scheduled to pick up in September with several transmission jobs starting up.

Congratulations and best wishes to Robert Jacobs, Lawrence "Chief" Bayless and George Alles on their recent retirement.

Glen E. Petznick, B.M.

Wal-Mart Job Goes Union

L.U. 1701 (catv, ees,i,o&u), OWENSBORO, KYBro. Kenny Woodward from the Examining Board reports David Porter passed the JW exam recently. Welcome, Bro. Porter. Work in the jurisdiction remains very slow with over 130 on Book I and several apprentices still off. We thank all locals employing our traveling members.

We welcome union contractor Jays Electric from Paducah, KY. Jays signed a letter of assent and was successful at securing work at the new Wal-Mart in Owensboro. Bus. Mgr. Gary Osborne reports Jays will be bidding the Sams Club, also locating in Owensboro, as well as Wal-Mart locating in Henderson, KY. Good luck, Jays, and we look forward to working with you. Organizer Mike Roby has been busy meeting with several nonunion contractors in the jurisdiction and is always looking for salts. If interested, please contact him.

The JATC reminds all members to check the expiration dates on their Passport & ARSC training cards. The committee will hold update classes soon. Call the hall for information.

In sadness we report the passing of retired Bro. Otis Hughes. May he rest in peace.

Excellent Training Facilities

L.U. 1739 (i&o), BARRIE, ON, CANADAWork is still slow in our area, but thanks to our brothers and sisters in other locals, we are receiving help getting through the lean times. I am fortunate to be back from Oshawa and am glad to be getting reacquainted with some of our home brothers at the Honda expansion in Alliston.

Several brothers are gathering each Thursday evening at the union hall to participate in the Level Three Fire Alarm Training program. Even your local scribe is finding that one is never too old to learn. The remodeling of the building has given us excellent training facilities and it is hoped all will take full advantage of the courses offered.

We extend condolences to our brothers and sisters in Oshawa Local 894 on the passing of former business manager Robert Hill. Bob was a big, friendly fellow who always had a kind word for traveling members visiting his area. He had a knack for remembering names and faces and would ask about folks he hadnt seen for a while. He will be missed by many in and far from his home local. May he rest in peace.

New Union Hall

L.U. 1749 (u), NEW JOHNSONVILLE, TNOur local recently purchased a former church building directly behind the site of the tragic 1978 train explosion in Waverly, TN and now proudly call this building ours. The hall will now be transformed to a place we can be proud of and one the community can easily recognize as a local union of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. An open house is planned soon. For details and photos see our web site at www.ibew1749.org.

Congratulations to Bro. James Corbitt, electrical control building operator at the New Johnsonville plant, for a strong finish in the Music City Marathon in Nashville and to members who competed in the Memphis in May International Barbecue contest.

Congratulations also to recent instrument and electrical graduates at Cumberland City and Johnsonville fossil plants: Thomas Alexander, Bill Derington, Randy Baggett II, Eric Lackey, Jerry Hicks Jr., Corey Zarnke, Andrew Durham II, John Boyd, Frank Lynch, Robin Spicer, Jeff Hudson, Daniel Lee, Scott Roy and Kristin Rye.

Our union is only as strong as its members. Members are only as strong as the union. Unity is our strength. We are brothers and sisters; we are a union; we are the IBEW.
