Labor Out in Force

L.U. 103 (cs&i), BOSTON, MAAt the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, labor groups were out in force. The convention by all accounts was a huge success. Democratic nominees John Kerry for president and John Edwards for vice president are dedicated to supporting the rights of union workers.

Sept. 5, 2004, from the Boston Herald Newspaper: "Hewlett-Packard chairwoman and CEO Carly Fiorina recently declared that No American has a God-given right to a job.

"Forty or fifty years ago, Fiorinas bald statement, and its clear implications, would have fueled a firestorm of labor protest and political controversy. Not now. Working men and women in this country arent part of the political equation. Business and capital rule. Its that simple."

In the quest for corporate quarterly profits, would abolishing OSHA or workers compensation be next? If you believe in the statement from CEO Carly Fiorina and in Republican views, vote Republican. However, if you are for workers rights, vote Democratic!

Local 103s third annual Labor Day Family Outing at the hall was a great success, featuring activities for the kids, raffles and more.

2004 Labor Day rally
in Lorain, OH.

L.U. 129 (i,mt&spa), LORAIN, OHThe 10th annual Labor Day rally held at Lakeview Park in Lorain was a huge success. Nearly 40,000 trade unionists and their families turned out to enjoy the entertainment and hear guest speakers.

Speakers included U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-13th OH), comedian Jerry Springer and many local and state officials, all of whom voiced their disapproval of the George W. Bush administration.

Our work picture has gotten a little better with the first phase of the new Kalahari Water Park in Sandusky finally starting and some short calls in the area.

Be A Voice for Labor

L.U. 131 (i,rtb, rts&spa), KALAMAZOO, MIAs union members we must take an active part in our communitiesour voices must be heard. We cannot stand on the sidelines and wonder when the next paycheck will come along. Involvement is the key, both as individuals and as a united organization.

If we allow the decisions of a few to govern our lives, then we as a nation are standing in the shadows of a true oligarchy. We must get involvedwe must speak out on matters of importance to working people.

Today the main issues are right in our face, and we must address them. Such opportunities start right in our own community, with our school boards and our city councils. I urge you to get involved, to make your voice heard and take part in the decision-making process that affects you and your family.

We extend sincere condolences to the families of Bros. Richard "Dick" Dehammer and Gordon "Pete" Leversee. Our brothers have passed on, but they are not forgotten.

International Officers Visit

Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill administers the oath of
obligation to new Local 191 members at a July 2004
local union meeting in Everett, WA.

L.U. 191 (c,i,mo,rtb&st), EVERETT, WALocal 191 was honored to have Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill, Int. Sec.-Treas. Jeremiah J. OConnor, Ninth District Int. Vice Pres. Michael S. Mowrey, IEC member Patrick Lavin and National Political Coordinator Edwin Lopez in attendance at our July union meeting.

The meeting was well attended and the message delivered was simple: This is the most critical presidential election of our lifetime and we must get out the vote.

Pres. Hill also emphasized that we are all held accountable for our actions on the jobsite. On some jobs, customers have complained about our members attitude, and Pres. Hill is very concerned about this. Pres. Hill spoke about the Code of Excellence and how it is a tool we can use to help our membership. Int. Sec.-Treas. OConnor spoke about Pres. George W. Bush and what has happened to our country since his election.

Political Coordinator Lopez spoke about what we can do to win the November elections. Vice Pres. Mowrey and IEC member Lavin spoke about the importance of members getting involved in their local union.
