L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CAAfter a hectic summer that saw Local 684 job calls go into Book IIwith school jobs, the TID Co-Gen, Black Oak Casino and food processing projectthe forecast for all looks to be a slower, though sustained pace. Thank-you to all the travelers who helped us maintain this work. New jobs such as the aboveground bid package for the TID Co-Gen, the Gallo Performing Arts Center in Modesto (Collins), a new high school in Modesto (Howe), and the $500 million new Kaiser hospital complex should keep us busy for a while. Word to the wise: You will need state certification to be dispatched after January 1, 2005. But hey, the test is not as hard as it seemed before I took it. Remember to vote for labor friendly candidates. Your vote in this great country of ours is the key to the futureyours and that of your children. Torrey Newton, P.S. [See "Currents," page 25, IBEW Journal, September 2004.] Among Local 702 members serving overseas is journeyman lineman Charles "Wes" Briddick, whose father and brother are also local members. We are proud of the Briddick family and their commitment to Local 702. We are very close to the presidential election. Brothers and sisters, this is our yearthis is the year that all members recognize we cannot take another term of "Dubya." Everyone is all "Bushed" out. Vote for the working class and the respect we so deserve. Marsha Steele, P.S. Congratulations to Retirees

On Aug. 2, 2004, Apogent Technologies was purchased by Fisher-Scientific Corp. Barnstead International is a subsidiary of Apogent. Local 704 anticipates continuing a good working relationship with Fisher-Scientific as we have had over the years with Barnstead International. On July 25, 2004, Local 704 ratified a new four-year agreement with Bodine Electric of Peosta, IA. The interest-based bargaining method was utilized and both sides are pleased with the outcome of the negotiation process. Bodine Electric, which employs 130 people, was organized by Local 704 in 2000. Condolences to the family of Lauren Trudo, who passed away May 26, 2004. Bro. Trudo was initiated as an IBEW member in 1952. At the time of this writing, Local 704 still has members on Book I. With present jobs starting, we hope to have all local members employed this fall.
