October 2004 IBEW Journal John Kerry Visits Local
L.U. 58 (em,i,rtb&spa), DETROIT, MIAs of August about 500 members returned to our Book I from the shutdowns and at press time our list stands at around 1,220. The apprentice book is at about 10 with two new classes taken in during July-August. The short-term outlook is not good. Long term, possibly around October, we should see some movement of workers gearing up for the auto show. Steel mill work should pick up and Ford has a few projects slated for its Wayne facilities. Hearty thanks to our members who helped with two Habitat houses in Roseville and two in Pontiac. Thanks to our Local 58 contractors that contribute materials to these worthy endeavors. John Kerry stopped in at our hall on June 17 and many members were able to talk and shake hands with our next president. Plato had an interesting theory: "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." Think about who you want playing with the economics that affect your lifestyle. Make every vote count toward restoring a labor-friendly leader in the White House. Remember: Do not shop at anti-labor Wal-Mart or Sams Club. Kathy Devlin, P.S. Unity of Purpose L.U. 68 (i), DENVER, COOur annual summer picnic was held Aug. 2 with over 1,000 members and family sharing good fun, food and brotherhood. We need all the members help to regain market share. We come together with a unity of purpose because our industry demands it. Laurence F. ONeill, Pres. Congratulations, Graduates!

We look forward to a long, prosperous relationship with BLC, as well as all of our signatory contractors. Work in our jurisdiction is still slow but improving. We were able to clear our book and work some travelers on a recent shutdown at the Ford assembly plant in Norfolk. Thanks to all the brothers and sisters who helped us out on the short notice and long-hour situations at the Ford plant. Dennis R. Dasher, P.S.
