October 2004 IBEW Journal Organizing/Election Activity L.U. 332 (c,ees,i,o&st), SAN JOSE, CADid you know that almost half of eligible voters dont vote? Lets cast our votes for working families. Talk to your spouse, children, friends. Voter registration forms are available at the union hall. Lets elect labor-friendly candidates in November. The Organizing Department has been busy. Eastridge Mall owners are using out-of-town contractors, paying a lower wage and taking money out of the local economy. Organizer Bob Seaberg is spearheading an active hand billing campaign. Thanks to all members who have helpedespecially the first year apprentices. Also under way is a major statewide effort to organize and monitor a large nonunion contractor. With all the locals participating, we should have greater success. Contact the Organizing Department to see how you can help. Bro. Paul Shaimas announced his retirement in August. Paul was a Political Action Committee member for 21 years and chairman for 15 years. Thanks, Paul, for all your contributions to the local. This is a very important time in the history of organized labor. In what direction will we go? Please get involved in this election and in organizing. Gandhi said: "Whatever you do will seem insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." Alan L. Wieteska, P.S. Every Vote Counts L.U. 340 (em,i,o,rts&spa), SACRAMENTO, CAThe upcoming November national election is one of the most important in our countrys history. Please register and make sure all your eligible family members are registered to vote. Support labor-friendly candidates with your donations and in every way you can. Vote for candidates who will: keep jobs in the United States, protect your wages, pensions and Social Security from corporate raids and do something to stop the runaway cost of health insurance. With great sadness we report the loss of Bro. Lud Larson. Lud served the local as steward, trustee, president and business representative. Lud also gave to the community with thousands of hours of volunteer time helping those less fortunate. We have lost a true friend and brother. We also lost retired Bro. Phillip Bennett recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. A.C. Steelman, B.M. Swearing In/Pin Party

When we began the drive, 79 percent of our membership was registered. After the first few weeks were up to 85 percent registered, an impressive jump. The next step will be door-to-door registration. Ray Pendzinski, P.S. Unit Pancake Breakfasts
L.U. 424 (as,ees,em,es,i,mo,o,ptc, rtb, rts, spa,&u), EDMONTON, AB, CANADAOur annual pancake breakfasts in Unit 2 Calgary (held early in July just before the Calgary Stampede) and two weeks later in Unit 1 Edmonton on July16 (prior to the 10-day "Klondike Days" exhibition) were held under blue skies. Calgary sent "Sheriff" John Last up to the Unit 1 breakfast again to "arrest" anyone not having fun in what appears will become an annual stunt. Next year, Edmonton will endeavor to have "Klondike Kate" (a singer-entertainer hired by the Exhibition Board as a "good times ambassador" to roam throughout the city during the exhibition) attend the Unit 1 function. June local union elections brought several changes in elected officers. The accompanying photo puts faces to the names. The "changeover" in administrations became effective at the July 16 E-Board meeting. They are now in the process of solving several difficult key issues facing the local. With some help and patience from the members, we will succeed. The membership thanks all candidates, both elected and otherwise, for being ready to serve the local! Dave Anderson, P.S. |
