October 2004 IBEW Journal Bro. Shake Mourned L.U. 278 (em,govt,i&o), CORPUS CHRISTI, TXOur local union elections were held Saturday, June 5, 2004. The following officers were elected: Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Mike Carranco, Pres. Craig Loving, Rec. Sec. Roger Jenkins and Treas. Ruben Hernandez. Executive Board members are: David Cantu, Charles Hillis, Dan Gardner, Bill Bonawitz, Jason Lucas, Dennis Schirmer and John Witzsche. Congratulations and best wishes to all. The local union lost a truly great union leader on July 9, 2004. Former business manager Robert S. Shake lost a courageous battle to the occupational disease mesothelioma, a terminal lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Bro. Shake served an unprecedented 12 consecutive years as Local 278 business manager. He leaves a legacy of tireless dedication to our labor movement and Democratic Party politics. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. The local is also saddened by the loss of Bros. Christopher Bouldin, Amado Sanchez, Neal Chollette, James T. Baker, George Arnold Sr., R.N. L.U. 280 (c,ees,em,es,i,mo,mt,rts& st), SALEM, ORLocal 280 held an Open House June 18 for retiring Exec. Sec. Gail Garrett, who served the local for 30 years. Among the many members attending were former Bus. Mgrs. Glen McCall, Al Reddig and Steve Rose. A Workers Memorial with granite benches and a flagpole was dedicated in Gails honor. We thank you, Gail! Local 280 volunteers "walked the walk" as they went door-to-door in June and July as part of the Oregon AFL-CIO Labor Neighbor campaign, speaking with fellow union members about November elections. Thanks to Tom and Sharyl Baumann, Teresa Howard, Greg Creal, Mike Davis, Denny Ellis, Dave Baker, Tommy Paul, Tim Nicol, Rich Lofton, Dennis D. Caster, Wayne Lathrop, Ray Beauvais, Julie Emmett, Susan Garstecki, Steve Rose, Tim Frew and Nathan Phillips. At the annual Apprenticeship Banquet, 54 apprentices were honored for their achievements. Honors for highest GPA went to Marcy Valentine for the Inside program, Michael Twiggs for Limited Energy and Travis Frick for the Residential program. Apprentices voted Dave Baker "On-The-Job Outstanding Trainer" of the year. Apprentices elected Kelly Kime as contestant and Jeff Klemp as alternate to represent the Training Trust at the Western States Electrical Contest in Reno, NV. Dennis D. Caster, B.M./F.S. Officers Elected L.U. 306 (i), AKRON, OHNew officers and board members were elected in June and sworn in at the July meeting. Serving for a three-year term are: Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. David Moran, Pres. Mike Kammer, Vice Pres. Bob Sallaz, Rec. Sec. Jim Hornacek and Treas. Lou Torcasio. Executive Board members are: Jeff Beaumont, Dave Bedard, Jim Betz, Jim Deckert, Todd Michl, Vern Saylor and Tom Wright. Examining Board members: Mark Douglas Jr., Rick Hicks and Mike Might. We thank recently retired member John Hornacek for his 35 years of dedicated service as an officer of Local 306. Congratulations to newly retired Bros. David Brown and Frank Young. L.U. 308 (i,se&spa), ST. PETERSBURG, FLThe apprentice graduation banquet was held in June. Congratulations to our new journeymen: John DeHaven, Roger Roberts and John Nangle, apprentice of the year. We ask all members to make sure they are registered to vote. Because some electronic voting machines dont provide a paper record, we request that all our members vote by absentee ballot to ensure their votes are counted. You may request a ballot from the supervisor of elections in the county where you are registered. It is extremely important that you vote for all labor endorsed candidates. L.U. 322 (govt,i,lctt,o&u), CASPER, WYLongtime Organizer/Asst. Bus. Mgr. Garry Nettik retired in May. Garry gave a lot of himself to this Brotherhood. We all will miss him. Ray Smallwood was hired as our new organizer. Ray is a 28-year member and has been involved in many organizing efforts. Frontier Electric, a Jackson area shop, became a signatory contractor. Frontier owner is Justin Booher. Bro. Lindsay Pattalochi and his wife, Denise, opened Sagebrush Electric in the Casper area. Lindsay is a 29-year member. We have started Level I Instrumentation training. Over 20 members signed up for the class. We held an OSHA 500 Train-the-Trainer course in August. Glen Daniels was appointed political liaison. He is working to get members registered to vote and developing a Politics 101 class for the membership. After the October 2004 meeting, the COPE Committee will host a Chili Cook Off. Many political candidates have accepted an invitation to attend. We mourn the loss of Bros. Joe Murphy and Patrick Marvel, both 31-year members who passed away in June.
