October 2004 IBEW Journal Onward
L.U. 26 (ees,em,es,govt,i&mt), WASHINGTON, DCIn June part of the jurisdiction of Local 637 in Roanoke, VA, was consolidated into Local 26 by the International Office. Local 26 was also given six counties from the jurisdiction of Local 666 in Richmond. Local 26 will become a successor to the collective bargaining agreements in place in those areas. We will work to organize more contractors in these areas and get more of the available work. Bro. Tom Miller is working as business agent in the Roanoke office. Two other agents were also brought on boardSteve Zimmerman in the southern Maryland office, following Bobby Rutans retirement; and Melvin Cherry, as organizer in the D.C. office. We have a new office in Winchester replacing our Front Royal office. The building that previously housed Local 26 was sold. A considerable amount of work is coming up in the Winchester area, and I believe our presence there will help us get that work. We mourn the deaths of: Bros. Aveton Green, Charles Dawkins, David Musgrove, Morgan Williams, Robert Grow, Stephen Cockerille, Max Foster and Virgil J. Smith; and retired Bros. Edward Pumphrey Jr., John J. Chirichilla, Ernest Moore, Gerald Williams, Donald Eastham, William C. Beatty, Ernest Simpson and William Savage Recently retired are: Charles W. Armel, Brian E. Francis, Roy Pilkington, Gerhard W. Schuster, Dale S. Woolwine, James R. McGee, William G. Boan, James L. Davis, Thomas J. Gough, Joseph E. Milnor, Joseph P. Conn, Robert D. Rutan, Charles K. Thayer and Deborah Leach. Charles E. Graham, B.M. Officers Elected L.U. 34 (em,i,rts&spa), PEORIA, ILLocal 34 elections were held June 19. Officers elected are: Bus. Mgr. Fin. Sec. Mike Everett, Pres. Dennis Shelton, Vice Pres. John Walker, Rec. Sec. Dennis Greiner and Treas. Mark McArthy. Executive Board members: from Quincy jurisdiction, Robert Sheely; from Galesburg jurisdiction, Corey Aten; and from Peoria jurisdiction, Larry Oppe, Ron Mauerman and Todd Holzinger. Examining Board members: Greg Happ, John Steele and Ryan Sharum. IBEW convention delegates are Marty Clinch and Tony Klockenga; alternate delegates are Dan Kentner and Steve Munton. Congratulations on a job well done to election judge Kenton Riggs and his officials. The work outlook as of this writing in June looks so-so. Our books are creeping into the 200s once again, but if the ethanol plant goes as intended it will be running by November 2005. The Havana powerhouse has some work projected to be completed by the end of the year. Some movement in the books looks good. Jason Norton, P.S. Finally a Few Cranes
L.U. 38 (i), CLEVELAND, OHThere are finally a few cranes in downtown Cleveland. One at 6th & Euclid is for the new Ohio Savings Bldg., to include a parking garage with retail stores and apartments above it. Harrington Electric has the job. The other crane is for the new Pinnacle Bldg. Ullman Electric has the job. This project will be a 12-story condominium and apartment complex. Marous Brothers are finishing up work at the Bingham Bldg. on West 9th where Gateway Electric is working on the apartments and Inland Electric is doing a new grocery store. Marous is expected to break ground on the first of three new condominium buildings next door to the Bingham. The increase of living space downtown should continue to generate more retail, restaurant and nightclub building. Dennis Meaney, B.R. Strength in Numbers L.U. 46 (c,em,i,rtb, rts,cs,es,mt,mo, mar,as,et&et), SEATTLE, WAAs the political season heated up, Local 46 rank and file have done an outstanding job of getting active in the battle to elect labor-friendly candidates. Members staffed the phone banks every week through the summer leading up to the general election, and walked targeted districts in the "Labor to Neighbor" program. The "Labor to Neighbor" program began here in Washington state in 2001 through the Washington State Labor Council. It has been effective in improving union household voting by as much as 18 percent, by identifying union households and offering all eligible voters in that household information on labor-friendly candidates as well as voter registrations forms or absentee ballots. For the June Swing Walks, IBEW members comprised fully half of the volunteers within the Puget Sound area. The entire labor movement rests on the principle that there is strength in our numbers. As individuals working alone, we can only have a limited impact. But, by working through IBEW-COPE and with the local, state and national AFL-CIO structures, we can truly make a difference. Karlena Bromiley, P.S. Changing of the Guard L.U. 48 (c,em,i,rtb, rts&st), PORTLAND, ORThe November presidential election fast approaches. If you havent registered to vote, get out and do it! John Kerry will need every single vote the IBEW can get him. Remember Florida in 2000! Another four years of Bush and many union brothers and sisters who are barely hanging on will not make it. The Local 48 election of officers ushered in a new set of faces. Our newly elected officers are: Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Barry Mitchell, Pres. Bruce Zimmerman, Vice Pres. Mike Edwards, Rec. Sec. Eric Hays and Treas. John Sargent. Several new members were elected to the Executive Board and the Examining Board. Bro. Mike Koler was appointed assistant business manager. Congratulations to our newly elected officers. We also thank former business manager Grant Zadow and former business representative Steve Shiprack for their service to the local. Former president Bob Palendech opted not to run for reelection. We thank Bob for his many years of dedicated service. The newly elected officers will be very busy with the work of the local. We all need to work together to help this transition take place and give our full support on behalf of the local union. Dave Jacobsen, P.S. |
