March 2004 IBEW Journal
L.U. 915 (i&mt), TAMPA, FLWe held our annual apprenticeship banquet and graduation ceremonies in December 2003. We currently have 213 apprentices stretched over 13 counties. In 2003 we topped out 25 inside journeyman wiremen and two residential wiremen. In the inside program, two brothers achieved a 100 percent attendance record: Geoffrey P. Hutchison and Michael T. Workman. Outstanding apprentices for the first through fourth years received a plaque and $50. First-year outstanding apprentice was Matthew Lyon; second year, Brian Maxwell; third year, Diane Weiss; and fourth year, Steve Kira. The fifth-year Outstanding Apprentice of the Year was Geoffrey P. Hutchison, who received $500, a plaque and a set of tools from Klein Tool Co. Geoffrey comes from a long line of IBEW electricians. Electro Design Engineering Inc. of Tampa and Cogburn Brothers Electric Inc. of Jacksonville donated a gift to every apprentice! Door prizes were also donated by Florida West Cast NECA, Arnett, Delgado, Edwards, Electro Design, Golf States, J.H. Ham, Precision, Regal, Dale Rossman, Southern, and White Electric. Bob Kaiser, P.S. L.U. 1049 (lctt,o&u), LONG ISLAND, NY2003 was another busy year for 1049. In the first quarter we negotiated a three-year contract for our Gas Craft Division. During that time our organizer was appointed to the Third District International Staff. His replacement, Pat Guidice, with the help of the Organizing Committee, organized Pole Care. Currently we are very close to card-check recognition with the NYPA Power Plant in Holtsville. In March a By-Laws Committee was established. Our revised by-laws were approved and are more representative of the makeup of our membership. Our Governmental Affairs Committee hosted our 10th annual golf tournament. On the political front they endorsed 31 candidates for office of which 27 were elected. The always-busy Community Affairs Committee held their annual Christmas tree sale to help needy families, and restock the food pantry. The Local 1049 membership received many accolades in 2003. Our members are responsible for making LIPA Number 1 in electric T&D reliability in New York State. Our power plants achieved a reliability rating of greater than 98 percent. And of course there was the blackout. The state governor and the chairman of LIPA recognized the local numerous times for our outstanding efforts. At this writing, we are in negotiations with our largest employer, KeySpan Energy, and we are cautiously optimistic about the outcome of negotiations. We look forward to a productive 2004. Thomas Dowling, R.S. L.U. 1141 (i,rts&spa), OKLAHOMA CITY, OKJames G. Jim Monteith has decided to retire effective April 1, 2004. Jim served as director of the Western Oklahoma Electrical JATC for 32 years and has been a member of IBEW Local 1141 for 43 years. In his 32 years as the JATC Director he has been involved in the education of countless thousands of future journeyman wiremen, for which we are all very appreciative. Jim has been a mainstay asset for not only the JATC but for the local union. We wish him happiness and fun as he starts a new part of his life, although he will be greatly missed. He and his wife, Treva, plan to enjoy retirement in Oklahoma City, OK, with their children and grandchildren close by. But dont think hes washed upno, his wife just purchased her own Harley Davidson so they can ride side by side. No rocking chair on the porch for this old man. Congratulations, Jim! Our condolences to the families of retired Bros. Forest R. Hollingsworth and Willard O. Malloy, both of whom passed away in December 2003. H. Marty Crain, Jr., B.M./F.S.
L.U. 1289 (u), LAKEWOOD, NJSolidarity Day 2003 was celebrated Nov. 8 by IBEW Locals 1289, 400 and 1820 at the Local 400 union hall on Highway 138 in Wall Township, New Jersey. IBEW members and their families came together, sharing work and family experiences and expressing their support for the union. Children were entertained by a clown, who applied the ever-popular face painting, and a magician, who made balloon animals. A DJ provided music for the celebration, and members donated great food. The tremendous enthusiasm of the committee, donors and members made Solidarity 2003 a huge success! Committee members, chaired by Dan Rosato, worked hard and did a great job. Ed Stroup, Pres./B.M.

He worked his way through the apprentice lineman program and became a journeyman lineman in the Cambridge District. He later was promoted to lead lineman in The Federalsburg District and became a trouble serviceman in 1981, the position from which he retired. We wish Bro. Meredith a long and happy retirement. Bro.
