March 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 363 (catv,em,govt,i,t,u&ws), NEW CITY, NYWe are fortunate that our community provides many jobs to our localand in return we happily provide volunteer service in the community. Local 363 takes pride in its volunteer service projects. We believe volunteerism and solidarity are two sides of the same coin of community. Our members volunteer their services year round. During the holidays many towns in our jurisdiction depend on us to install holiday lights. Baseball field lighting is another popular service. Organizations that have benefited from our volunteer services include: Orangetown Historical Museum, Clarkstown Historical Museum, New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Corps., Rockland County Sheriffs Department, Haverstraw Brick Museum, Orange Community College, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, Christmas in April and the community hospitals. We serve, we care, we volunteer to share. Thanks to all Local 363 volunteers. Timothy Poulin, P.S. L.U. 401 (c,i,o,rts&st), RENO, NVThanks to Asst. Bus. Agent John Seymore and all the members who volunteered for the Gift of Lights organization. There were 2 million Christmas lights, 15 generators and hundreds of spider boxes and extension cords spread throughout a local park. This benefit raised money for local charities. At least 70 children attended the locals 2003 Christmas party. Thanks to members, their spouses, and Santa himself (Noel Vestibe). Local 401 sponsored a trap shoot Nov. 15 to raise funds for the political action committee (PAC). The Nevada State AFL-CIO trap shoot was Nov. 9. The softball team won the Reno Division III championship. Our local jurisdiction includes five counties in California. We need to start taking our California journeyman exams. The licensing will be required in 2005. Information is available at the hall. Journeyman upgrade class schedules are available at the hall and at the J.A.T.C. Upcoming events include the golf tournament in June and the locals picnic in August. Our condolences to the families of the following members who passed away: George Jensen, Clarence Jewell, Sterling Farnsworth, Eli Maritano and Don Newton. J. Gabrielli, P.S.
L.U. 415 (c,govt,i&u), CHEYENNE, WYOn Dec. 5, 2003, Bro. Roger Richardson died following a long battle with cancer. Local 415, the IBEW and all who knew him have lost a loved and respected friend. Roger was dedicated to his family and the IBEW. He served this local in many ways. He was business manager from 1966-74, during some very difficult times. In 1974 he was appointed IBEW International Representative. He retired in 1989. I am honored to have worked with Roger throughout our careers. This article is dedicated to Rogers memory and to his family for their loss. Happy belated 75th birthday to Bro. Frank Morrow. Thanks again for the great job with our 100th year anniversary celebration. Our prayers go out for families of the many military men and women who have given their lives protecting this great country. We pray for the safe return of all who continue to serve. Work continues to be slow in our area for the near term, but we hope for improvement as the weather warms. There are good signs for northern Wyoming and, if the economy improves, for Cheyenne and Laramie. Upcoming elections are critical. We must elect representatives who will not tolerate the greed and corruption now such a part of business and politics. Our greatest power is the power to vote. Lets give this country back to working people. John J. Occhipinti, P.S. L.U. 449 (catv,em,i,o,rtb, rts, spa &u), POCATELLO, IDWork is still slow, but we hope to see an improvement in the next few months. As of this writing, some decent sized projects were scheduled to be bid in January. The Modelo Malting plant should start taking more people soon. I doubt we will see enough improvement to begin getting into Book II before next fall. We are gearing up for the next round of apprentice interviews. The fifth-year apprentices finished their classes just before Thanksgiving. Congratulations to the graduates. Well wishes go out to Bros. Leonard Skeeter Howell and Charles Burk as they start their retirement. Ned Jones, Pres. L.U. 459 (ees,em,so&u), JOHNSTOWN, PAOur local will go through some changes and we are confident they will be good. I have resigned as business manager and Donald J. Hoak has been appointed to fill the unexpired term. Bro. Hoak has been very active with his old local and with Local 459. He spent 10 years on staff and has a wealth of experience. He will work to promote the relationships established with our Third District, the I.O., and all other labor groups we are active with. Our local, like many others, is trying ways to get our members more active. We must make them realize that gains come through membership involvement; nothing just gets handed to us. We must turn around their political apathy. We take this opportunity to thank many of you across the United States and Canada for helping Local 459 when we needed it. We also thank our International and the Third District for all their help when I was the business manager. We are blessed to have the great leadership that exists within our IBEW. Please support them. Joseph Sanna, Asst. B.M./P.S. |
