January/February 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 601 (i&rtb), CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, IL-With many projects being bid for spring, work in the area seems to be steady. On Oct. 11, Local 601 sponsored our annual Streator Steak Stag. Chmn. Ron Becker and Mark Ferko organized this year's stag, which featured door prizes (tools, T-shirts, etc), good food and brotherhood. The voice of the membership can only be heard with good union meeting attendance and apprentices as well as journeymen should be heard. Local 601 deeply mourns the loss of Bros. Robert Sullivan, Donald Moorte, Jim Craft, Don Schmall and retired business manager Mike Warmbier. They will be greatly missed. Chris Cook, P.S. L.U. 602 (i,o&u), AMARILLO, TX-In 2003, ten apprentices graduated to Inside Journeyman Wireman. Congratulations to the Local 602 members who are fine examples of our high-quality journeymen members. Bro. Cecil Gene Nix has been ill. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Gene is very strong and hard working, a loving husband and a wonderful father. In Amarillo, Lubbock and Midland the work is slow, but we hope it will pick up after the first of the year. We are proud to announce that Duke Electric, a union contractor out of Amarillo, received a Wal-Mart job. The project was a great success due to the quality and safety of the work. Nicky Bivins, P.S.
L.U. 606 (em,es,i,rtb, spa&u), ORLANDO, FL-The new JATC facility is under way. The groundbreaking ceremony included a diverse group of important partners with the JATC. They are representatives from IBEW, NECA, Walt Disney World and Orange County Public Schools. Local 606 Bus. Mgr. Harry Brown and JATC Chmn. Terry Davis are holding the groundbreaking shovel in the photo. Bus. Mgr. Brown is also holding the Partnership Trophy presented to the JATC from Walt Disney World. These trophies are only given to elite organizations that have special relationships with Walt Disney World. A big thank you to all the apprentices who helped work the OLMCC booth at the NECA National Convention held in Orlando. Janet D. Skipper, P.S. L.U. 611 (catv,es,i,lcttt,o,spa&u), ALBUQUERQUE, NM-At this writing work is still slow in our jurisdiction with 300 members on Book I. In July we graduated three new linemen, Ciddio Perez, Phillip Benavidez and Adam Wyson; and five inside journeymen, Julio Garcia, Matthew Jackson, Joshua Moser, Tim Solano and Tom Gonzalez. The C. S. Mitchell Award went to Shane McKinley. Local 611 extends condolences to the friends and families of the following members who passed away: Jose R. Barela, Ben Moeller, Holland Edwards, David C. Lousberg, Tommy Martin, Gerald R. Zaft, Hal Killough, Simon Naranjo, Nelson (Ted) Bernard III, Lawrence I. Maestas, Sammy L. Vigil, Grover P. Carr, Charles A. Lovette, James (Josh) Duplissey, Arnold K. Massaroni, Harry C. Carson, and Julian J. Lucero. Darrell J. Blair, P.S.
L.U. 617 (c,i,o&st), SAN MATEO, CA-Work continues to be very poor. For the good news, once again a fine graduation class rewarded Local 617. Apprentices who stayed with the challenging five years of work and school are: Erik Benson, Steve Booker, Joseph Botelho, Christofer Bufka, Victor Cipparrone, Arthur Citron, Duane Davis, Mike Dolan, Miguel Garcia, Andrew Giessner, Egon Grundmann, Josh Kirkorian, Mark Leach, Anthony Ligouri, Timothy Lynch, Mike Marinus, Glenn Martin, Richard Narayan, Giamoco Parenti, Paul Perez, Hung Pham, Jeffrey Smith, Marvin Sumner, Jarod Vasco and Jason Yee. Proper and safe electrical installations are only possible from well-trained and disciplined personnel. The IBEW has been the ONLY organization in the industry doing that well. If only this fact were more widely know, people would realize that the slight cost difference of union work is well worth it. California state licensing will restrict the self-described nonunion electricians, who operate at the risk of all Californians' lives and safety. Soon only qualified personnel will perform electrical work in this state. Among them, our new graduates will shine! Pierre St. Cyr, P.S. |
