July/August 2003 IBEW Journal L.U. 83 (u), BINGHAMTON, NYLocal 83 would like to congratulate our new brothers and sisters from Local 36 in Rochester, NY, who recently voted UNION YES IBEW! We also wish to congratulate Third District International Representative Mike Flanagan for the fine work he did organizing. Local 83 officers have been busy keeping members up-to-date with recent political issues, and increasing COPE contributions. Legislative work in Albany has the "5KV to 15 IV Gloving Bill" through the Assembly and Senate, ready for the governors signature. It sets maximum voltage gloving limits for electrical workers in New York for the next five years. New contracts at our Generating Stations were approved. Co-op contracts at Onieda-Maddison and Delaware County will also soon be negotiated. Don S. Tuttel, P.S.
L.U. 84 (o,t&u), ATLANTA, GAWith the war in Iraq behind us, I would like to thank the members of Local 84 who served our country on active military duty. Whether you agreed with the war or not, these members laid their life on the line and deserve our gratitude. Maybe with this crusade behind us we can focus on the issues at home. If we can rebuild Iraq maybe we can re-create some of the jobs that have been lost while this economy has gone to hell in a hand basket. However, it will not be accomplished with tax breaks for the rich and trade policies that encourage importing foreign goods. Remember to buy American-Union made products if you can find any. Jim Woods, P.S.
L.U. 86 (ees,em,es,i,rts&spa), ROCHESTER, NYThanks to all the members who participated in the United Way "Rebuilding Together Project." The electrical repairs were long overdue for two needy homeowners. The volunteers included: Bill Gilligan, Don Peters, Paul Yatteau, Rob Broomfield, Carl Boden Sr., Ray Simmons, Wayne Schultz and the Norman brothersDave, George and Mike. Without them and the contractorsNortheastern Electric and Schuler-Haas Electricwho supplied service vans, such a worthwhile project would not have been possible. We recently concluded a Steward Training Class given by Int. Rep. Lawrence N. "Larry" Davis. Assisting were Bus. Mgr. Bill Auble, Asst. Bus. Mgr. Tom Shaffer and Referral Agent Tim Allen. Members in attendance were: Dave Snyder, Randy Roffe, Patrick Conner, Nathan Hoffer, Joan Miles, Kevin Brennan, Mike Gregor, Randy LaBarge, Bryan Manzer, John Parker, Mark VanCuyck, Phil Ponce and Donna Bruce. I would like to thank everyone. Your interest and participation made this very informative class possible. We wish a safe return home for all the members who served in the military in Iraq and to all members who were called to active duty. Remember Be Union Buy Union! Thomas Shaffer, Asst. B.M.
L.U. 95 (em,i,lctt, spa&u), JOPLIN, MOThanks to the members who donated their time to work on the Habitat for Humanity home. Volunteers included Jack Massey, Lyn Uto, Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Ron Lundien, William Shumate, Ray Uber, Robert Rhodes, Ray Maxwell, John Westmoreland and David Hill. After 58 years of service, contractor Carl Jackson is retiring. We sincerely thank Carl for his longtime dedication to the IBEW and NECA and wish him all the best. The Republican-controlled Missouri House is continuing to hammer at our state prevailing wage. We are asking all members to contact their representatives and voice their opinion. We must be politically active and involved in the upcoming elections. At this writing our work picture is slow, as it elsewhere. Please remember our troops fighting in Iraq. Local 95 Bros. David Martin and Dustine Dees were called to service. We thank them for their service and pray for their safe return. Ron Lundien, B.M/F.S
L.U. 97 (u), SYRACUSE, NYOnce again many of our brothers and sisters have been called upon to leave their families and homes to go abroad to protect and defend the freedoms of our great country. Bus. Mgr. Thomas Primero and staff extend heartfelt thanks to all those involved, whether stateside or abroad. Please remember them in your prayers and letters. PSEG announced a one-year extension of the completion date for the new plant at the site of the Albany Steam Plant. A lot of construction is still going on, with about 200 union workers on the job site. Contract negotiations seem to be never ending, with PSEG in April, Reliant Energy and Constellation Nuclear in May and NRG in July and August. Updates and details will be provided at the union meetings. Please try to make the regular or subdivision meetings. A lot is going on that will have a major effect on all of us, so we need your ideas and support to be successful. Dan Wismont, P.S.
