Lucky to Be Home

L.U. 309 (ilctt,mo,mt,o,rts, spa&u), COLLINSVILLE, ILDevelopment continues on the Illinois portion of Metro St. Louis. Around town, one notices the number of workers from other places, drawn by a relatively strong economy. I suspect their lodging and per diem often comes from what should be their total wage and benefit package.

I feel blessed to be employed near my home; able to get off work and watch my kids grow up. Many are lucky if they get home on weekends. Others must live and work on the road to survive.

Illinois is the most unionized state in America. Unionism means just compensation and conditions, creating a stable and productive work force. Im willing to bet it also means more moms and dads home at night.

Great Sign

L.U. 325 (i&rts), BINGHAMTON, NYLocal 325 would like to thank Kristy Husband, daughter of organizer Don Husband, for designing our new sign, which is displayed at NYSEG Stadium. We look forward to seeing our sign when we attend the Binghamton Mets baseball games.

Congratulations to our recent retirees, Rexford Baker, Dave Bame, Ron Beard, John Bendick, Tom M. Burns, George Decker, Brent Heath, Dale Hollenbeck, Dick Kennedy, Dave McDonough, Pat McLaughlin, Bob More, Jr., Jerry Osterhout and Richard Watson. At a party in their honor at the Relief Pitcher, they were each presented with IBEW watches.

Congratulations to our graduating class of 2003: Brian Gollogly, Mike Guenther, Wayne Horton, Brian Hughes, Tom Slesinsky and John Riesbeck, who will receive the high average award.

Labor Studies Important

L.U. 332 (c,ees,i,o&st), SAN JOSE, CAWork is still spotty here in Silicon Valley for all categories.

Work has begun on the new City Hall in downtown San Jose. It will be the tallest building in the city. Because of the labor-backed ballot initiative that was passed earlier, there is some school work this summer. Our contractors are bidding on public works jobs, which they have been reluctant to do in the past.

How can we make the next generation of workers have an appreciation of the importance of unions? We need to encourage ours schools to teach labor history and labor studies. Students need to know what working conditions were like before people organized themselves into unions. They need to know how "right to work" laws have affected unions. They need to know how the decline in union membership has hurt all workers.

If there are labor studies programs in your schools, they need support and encouragement. If not, its time to start them. Working people have shaped our history as much, or more, than any president or general.

Largest Class Ever

Largest Local 340 graduating class to date.

L.U. 340 (em,i,o,rts&spa), SACRAMENTO, CAGreetings from the Sunshine State, which by early May was still having one storm after another, putting on hold a large number of projectsand in turn a large number of electricians.

In May we had the largest graduating class in the history of our apprenticeship program with 51 new journeyman wiremen and 20 new system installers. Instructor Phil Austin did a great job as MC. Along with their certificates from the State of California and the NJATC, each graduate received gift certificates from the JATC and Platt Electrical Supply.

The top three graduates from our inside program (Bros. Ron Fox, David Bryan and David Smith) and the top three from sound & communications (Bros. Nick Andrade, Brad Blackhurst and Daniel Pacheco) also received fully loaded tool belts from NECA. Bros. Fox and Andrade had the highest GPAs in their respective classes and each received an IBEW watch and a craft test set for their hard work. One of this years inside graduates was Bro. Greg Larkins, who has been appointed to serve out the term as Local 340 Vice President.

Local 340 is proud to have 71 new journeymen. They, along with you, are the key to the future of the union electrical construction industry. It is only through skilled craftsmanship and trade unionism that the IBEW will continue to grow and realize the full potential of our great UNION.

Longtime Service Awards

L.U. 349 (em,i,mps, rtb, spa&u), MIAMI, FLOur work picture is still slow, but we hope it will pick up soon.

Years of service certificates and pins were presented to members with 50, 55, and 60 years of service at an April luncheon at the union hall. Fifteen retirees, their wives and friends attended, and the local gave out four 50-year pins, 10 55-year pins and one 60-year pin. We congratulate and thank all for their longtime service and dedication.

With sadness we report that Bro. Mike Kochler passed away in March 2003. Bro. Kochler was awarded a commendation medal for heroism as a sergeant in the Vietnam War. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

The men and women serving in our nations armed forces in Iraq are on all our minds. We thank them for serving and hope for a safe return for these patriots.

Come to a union meeting, get more involved and take an interest in your local.

Frank Albury, P.S.
