Changing of the Guards

L.U. 275 (catv,em&i), Muskegon, MIAfter 35 years as a member of local 275, including the last nine as business agent, Bro. George Robinson announced his retirement, effective July 1. During his career he has held almost every local office and been on almost every committee. Georges dedication to the IBEW and our local will always be an inspiration to us all. We thank George for his unwavering service to our local and wish him a happy and healthy retirement.

Our Executive Board has appointed Walter Christhopherson to serve out the remainder of the term, which ends June of next year. Walter has been an instructor in our apprenticeship program since 1994 and training director for the last 6 years. His experience and knowledge will be a great asset to our future advancement.

David Kitchen will fill the training director vacancy left by Walter. David is one of our best instructors and will do a great job as our new director.

Our Pres. Rod Lind resigned in March for personal reasons. Our executive board has appointed Sean Egan to serve the remainder of this term.

Sean Egan, P.S.

Tribute to Cesar

Among those remembering Cesar Chavez are Local 278 Bus. Mgr. Robert Shake, left, and Pres. Mike Carranco, right.

L.U. 278 (em,govt,i&o), CORPUS CHRISTI, TXA march honoring the birthday of the late Cesar Chavez was held in Corpus Christi on March 29, a tribute to the this great American labor leader who founded the United Farm Workers of America AFL-CIO and organized farm workers in California and Texas.

Construction has begun on the new multi-purpose arena in beautiful downtown Corpus Christi. N.R. Johnston Electric and J.R. Electric are joint venturing this project. Scott Electric was awarded the electrical on the $100 million desulfurization unit at Valero Refining. One of the reasons Scott Electric got this job was the outstanding work done by Local 278 members on a previous Valero job. Congratulations to all those members who worked on that job and represented what the IBEW can do.

Congratulations to the following members who received Service Pins. A 60-year pin went to E.C. Duncan and 55-year pins went to Amado Sanchez, Samuel V. Squyres, Robert L. Steele, William O. Sumrow, Joe E. Upton Jr., and Milford E. Zuch. 50-year pins went to Howard S. Barskdale, James R. Clanton, Paul R. Cooper, Robert W. Davis, Lewis E. Douglas, Jr., Emmitt W. Hale, Jr., Gilbert E. Hees, Clayton D. McKinney, Royce Reeves, George W. Riegel, Raymond D. Sibley.

We mourn the loss of Bro. Clyde Edwards.

Mike Carranco, Pres.

Political Action Now

LU 280 (c,ees,i,mo,mt,rts&st), SALEM, ORAs our work picture is still in the pits under the Bush Administrations "economic recovery," it is about time Local 280 gets ready for upcoming elections in 2004. Even though it might seem early, fundraising, education, registration, and political awareness must start now to make an effect in November of 2004.

Our schools are in disrepair, seniors are going without medicine, roads and highways are eroding, and there does not seem to be an end in sight. As our tax dollars go halfway around the world to rebuild a country that we destroyed, we better start rebuilding this country and taking care of matters right here at home. It is frustrating to see us waste our hard earned tax dollars ousting a dictator that our tax dollars helped support and put in place many years ago. That money should be spent right here! When will this madness stop?

The only way to stop it is to get involved in your local unions political activities that need numbers and dollars to make a difference. COPE contributions are very important and tax deductible. Even more important is taking an active role in your community. Please call the hall to see how you can help!

Jerry Fletcher, P.S.

Ottertail Generating Station

Even days below zero didnt stop Local 294 members at Ottertail Power: front row, left to right, Matt Lavoi, Scott Johnson, Gary Black, Al Broten, Ron Pierce, Frank Smith, Larry Johnson, Dan Aho and Guy Lauseng; back row, left to right, John Dixon, Jerry Hinkemeyer, Scott Mann, Lyle Thronson, Bruce Tobey, Russ Uber, Ron Christianson, Joel Dixon and Tom Parson Sr.

L.U. 294 (ees,em,i,rts, spa&u), HIBBING, MNIn the efforts to meet the rising power demands in Northern Minnesota, Ottertail Power is supplying a 44 megawatt peak generating station in Solway, MN. Its engineers and Local 294s skilled members brought this plant on line and on time despite several months of sub-zero temperatures. A special thanks to all involved.

Northern Minnesota welcomes all IBEW members and their families attending the 35th Annual Reunion, scheduled for July 6-13 at the Brainerd International Raceway. And the 7th annual Pat Demarais Memorial Fishing Tournament was scheduled for June on Lake Vermilion.

The economy in Northern Minnesota continues to be plagued by closings, bankruptcies and buyouts of the taconite plants on the Iron Range. Surely the spirit of brotherhood and unionism shall carry us all through these turbulent times. Thanks to all the IBEW locals in assisting our travelers with employment during these hard times.

Remember to Buy American because you are one. Support our troops and GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Dan Aho, P.S.
