A Fond Farewell

All in the family: Local 1307 retiree Newman Sonnier, left, with his grandson Chris Sonnier, who was sworn in by his father, Executive Board member Tom Sonnier (right).

L.U. 1307 (u), SALISBURY, MDBro. Mike Gates retired June 1 from his position as a relay technician at Connectiv and has the locals best wishes for retirement.

He was hired by Delmarva Power, now Conectiv Power Delivery, in 1968 as a journeyman lineman to work in the Princess Anne District. He was awarded a Trouble Serviceman position in the Grasonville District in 1979 and transferred to the Centreville office when the Grasonville office closed. In 1991 he became a relay tester and progressed through the ranks before becoming relay technician 1998. Mike remained in that position until his retirement. Heres wishing Bro. Mike Gates a very long and happy retirement.

We are entering an era when organized labor will be tested to the limits. A number of our elected officials are not what you would call labor friendly. Times like these make your support of COPE more important than ever. Along with that, support of your local is extremely importantso show your support by attending meetings. Your union can only help you if it remains strong. And remaining strong means a commitment from its membership to show its unity. Remember, its your union and its only as good as you make it.

We appreciate the opportunity to have worked with NASA on key programs over the years at Goddard and we look forward to continuing cooperation in the future. Good luck to the new Journeymen in their future endeavors. The Apprenticeship Committee would like to thank all of the apprentices and journeymen who donated their time and efforts in wiring a Habitat for Humanity home last winter. We had a good turnout.

Bus. Mgr. Harold Baggett and Pres. Gary Osborne report that Amtech Electric, a large non-union electrical contractor out of Lexington, KY, has signed a letter of assent and has also picked up a small project at the Carhartt plant in Hanson, KY. This job should be near completion by the time this article is printed. We welcome Amtech and hope they will continue to seek work in this area.

The state of Kentucky has passed an Electrical Licensing Law that will go into effect July 15. Thanks to Pres. Osborne, who has been working tirelessly for several years to get this legislation passed.

A Workers Memorial service was held April 25 at the Owensboro Council of Labor Workers Memorial on the Daviess County Courthouse lawn. WKW employee and Local 1701 member Donna Haynes conducted the ceremonies.

In sadness we report the passing of retired members Billy Sharp and T.L. Liles. May they rest in peace.
