July/August 2003 IBEW Journal
Senior Assistant Business Manager Nancy Sheehan is constantly busy starting new campaigns with new groups, or negotiating contracts for other groups who voted to authorize Local 111 to represent them. Negotiations for the Colorado Statewide Line Construction Agreement with Western Line Constructions, NECA is to commence this summer. Wages and health care costs are expected to be the big issues. Line work in Colorado is still plentiful although not to the level of pre-9/11. The new Colorado Statewide Underground Project Agreement has been implemented and is beginning to bear fruit. Currently two Contractors, Danella and PAR, have been successful in acquiring work under the new agreement. This contract was negotiated in an effort to recover underground electric and gas work being lost to non-IBEW bidders currently more attractive to PSCO. John L. Davis, P.S.
Organizing and Other Activities L.U. 113 (catv, ees,em,i,mo&o), COLORADO SPRINGS, COOur statewide outside organizer, Sean McCarville, thanks the membership for their participation in organizing. Organizing our industry is going to require that all of us spread the word and promote our union. In March we entered a float in the annual St. Patricks Day Parade in Colorado Springs. With money granted by the Labor Management Cooperative Committee, apprentices designed and built what all agreed was a creative, 40-foot representation of the electrical industry in the Pikes Peak region. The flatbed trailer used for this event will also be used in the annual Christmas Parade of Lights. Instructors Tony VanAuken and Hugh Smith will guide the brotherly bunch of apprentices in incorporating what they have learned in school to produce what we know will be a holiday lighting spectacular on wheels. On June 28, our annual Local 113 picnic was at Turkey Creek Ranch. The horseshoe tournament, softball games and volleyball matches were all fun. There were door prizes and bingo for those who liked sitting in the shade. The annual Old Timers Dinner at the hall had a cocktail hour and Bar-B-Que dinner to honor members for their years of service. Steve Plutt, P.S.
A six-man Portland General Electric crew, including Bros. Bill Young, Roger Frank, Bob Ramsayer, Salome Mendoza and Al Garibay in addition to Bro. Iwen, were on an early morning outage across the street when a house with three occupants exploded into flames from a natural gas leak. Bros. Iwen and Mendoza broke the living room window with a brick and helped one occupant out of the window. The rest of the crew went to the back of the house where Bro. Young ran his shoulder into a fence until it gave way to get to a bedroom window, which he broke out. Bro. Iwen went to the back bedroom and carried the remaining two people to Bro. Young at the window. The rest of the crew carried them to safety. Each crewmember was recently presented with the IBEW Lifesaving award. We congratulate and thank these brothers for their heroism. Byron Babka, Bus. Rep.
L.U. 129 (i,mt&spa), LORAIN, OHAt the time of this writing we have full employment and have been able to put some traveling brothers to work. The upgrade projects at U.S. Steel and Republic Technologies have been employing the most people. The new Justice Center is in the early stages and going well. Because of the tireless efforts of Bus. Mgr. Brian Baker and other union officials from the Building Trades, the project went union. The recent topping out ceremony generated great pride and accomplishment. The $45 million facility will be completed in 2004. Plans for the new union hall are in the early stages. We hope to break ground in the fall or early spring. The 15th annual Walleye Tournament was June 14, when we welcomed our local and out of state brothers to the event. Dennis Pedings, P.S.
A seven floor parking garage at the New Orleans Airport, a 27-story hotel at the Lykes Building, and a new restaurant at Harrahs casino are all 100 percent union projects. A future hotel at Harrahs will also be built by union craftsmen. Congratulations to 2003 Louisiana AFL-CIO scholarship winner Jennifer L.Vrbaskovich, daughter of Local 130 member George Vrbaskovich. Our best wishes to Jennifer! We would like to thank and congratulate Brother Edward Hartley for his 75 years as a member of Local 130. Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters serving in the armed forces defending freedom. Come home safe and soon. Thomas Hughes, P.S.
