Sign Up for OSHA Training

L.U. 577 (em&i), APPLETON, WIWork is slow, as it has been for a year. Some prospects for the summer are taking shape.

On March 5 the Wisconsin Paper Council signed a Contractor Safety Initiative that will, beginning Jan. 1, 2005, require all contract workers to have an OSHA 10+ card. We have 325 members who completed the OSHA 10-hour course last year. The rest of the 20 required safety topics are offered this year; to date 50 members have completed that training.

The 225 members and spouses at the annual Spring Banquet enjoyed good food and great conversation. Thanks to Bro. Tom Van Heuklon and his Social Committee members Mike Parker, Kay Salentine and Doug Schulz. Distinguished guests included 50-year members Jesse B. Brown, Thomas M. Gambsky, Renee F. Pauloski and Raymond J. Sanders.

The following wiremen will be completing their day instruction at the end of May 2003: Scott Baldwin, Jeremy Clark, Jon Fenlon, James Flek, Jamie Gilson, Corbett Harbor, Brad Hernke, Ryan Micke, Bill Rotta, Allen Schwobe, Tim Shew, David Stamborski and Jeff Zentner.

JATC Training
Dir. Kathleen
Barber.

L.U. 617 (c,i,o&st), SAN MATEO, CAWe have a new JATC Training Director. Sister Kathleen Barber has been appointed to fill the opening left by retiring Training Dir. Scotty Turner. Kathleen comes to this position with all the tools, drive and dedication needed to take on all the challenges.

With our new Training Facility, a two-story, state-of-the-art venue for education, we will need a new vision, a new mission and strong leadership for our future electricians and VDV technicians. California state licensing and journeyman upgrade training will require focus and organization and Kathleen brings all these attributes to the table. "She is the total package for the future," said Bus. Mgr. Michael Meals.

Market Recovery Success

L.U. 625 (ees,em,i,mar&mt), HALIFAX, NS, CANADAWe would like to thank Bro. W. "Bill" E.L. Bleakney for his years of service as press secretary and for a job well done!

Work is slow, with around 330 members on the books in January. The refinery is hiring, with about 55 members on site for two contractors. Tufts Cove No. 4 Turbine is hiring. Fundy Gypsum is also hiring, with two contractors employing 17 members to date. We have two schools and a correctional center in Units 2, 3 and 5, respectively, that will employ over 50 members combined. Numerous jobs have been awarded union thanks to our stabilization fund. In 2002 we won 141,000 man-hours through our market recovery programs, up from 75,000 in 2001.

A tip of the hard hat to the following members who retired in the past year: Bros. Bill Crowell, Murray Denison, Robert Fader, Rodney Hall, Frank Holman, John MacKinnon, Joe Maher, Russell Malay, Robert Pellerine, Fred Pickrem, George Saulnier, Richard Turner, and Ken Williams.
