Completion Banquet

L.U. 449 (catv,em,i,o,rtb, rts, spa&u), POCATELLO, IDWork has been slowing down recently, but we are getting a few calls at the hall. The Performing Arts Center at Idaho State University is underway, and a couple of other decent-sized jobs should get going soon. We should start seeing bid packages out for the Grupo Modelo (Corona) Malting Plant any day now.

We want to congratulate graduating apprentices Ryan Beeson, David Craig, Clay DeClark, Colby Hone and Matthew John.

Now more than ever it is time for all of us to get involved politically. In Idaho and all over the nation, unions are fighting to maintain the few freedoms we still have to organize and work together for fair wages and benefits.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bro. Bruce Campbell, who passed away Feb. 25, 2003.

Food Drive Success

Chairman Kenneth L. Richards.

L.U. 459 (ees,em,so&u), JOHNSTOWN, PAOnce again, the Community Service Food Fund Drive of the Local 459 was a success. We collected $5,700 in cash, and three truckloads of food were donated to 14 area food banks. Gift certificates for food were donated to members in need.

This was all made possible by the members of this local and some of the companies we work for. A big thanks goes to all the stewards and other brothers and sisters who helped collect the food and monies.

Kenneth L. Richards, Pres.

Tough Negotiations

L.U. 503 (t&u), MONROE, NYNegotiations with Warwick and Mirant Companies are tough going. The companies are looking to do away with pension and medical benefits. The locals teams are involved in fierce bargaining. Were asking all our brothers and sisters in the local to support the teams efforts.

We were able to minimize the layoffs at Frontier. On another positive note, O&R is hiring new linemen. Orientation is already in progress. Line school will begin shortly.

Getting Licensing Right

L.U. 545 (em&i), SAINT JOSEPH, MOI want to touch on an item that upsets many members of our local and possibly many otherslicensing! The city of Saint Joseph has enacted a license policy for electrical work. Anyone working on a job inside the city limits, except state or government projects, must have a city license.

The local has supported the testing and enforcement of the licensing procedure. Block and Associates (now Experior) is used as an independent agency for testing for this license. Yet many members have not taken the test or purchased a license, mainly because of the inconsistency of the enforcement and the cost of the license. I was an original advocate of the license, but have changed my mind. The local formed a committee to work with the Electrical Examining Board of Saint Joseph to improve the city license procedure. The committees opinions have fallen on deaf ears, as many of you said they would.

The issue of licensing is not just about testing, but about education. Codes change, products change and installation methods change.

L.U. 551 (c,i&s), SANTA ROSA, CAWork in our local remains slow at this writing and it has been a very difficult period for many of our members. We are doing all that we can to encourage our members to keep the faith. Some have opted to try salting for the first time in an effort to help us organize new employers, and many have hit the road in search of work.

Congratulations to the class of 2003 apprentice graduates. They are Bob Navarra, George Donohoe, Scott Olt, Andy Robertson, John Winding, Jamie OHara, Forrest Heil, Denise Anderson, Dan Laffan, Chris Peterson, Jerry Chesley, Chris Baum, Kevin Guy, John Ayala, Shane Blair, Randall Baier, Todd Santero, Chris Pannbacker and Corey Dallara. On behalf of Local 551 and the IBEW, we wish you all the very best of luck.
