April 2003 IBEW Journal
L.U. 60 (i), SAN ANTONIO, TX The San Antonio and Texas economy received a welcome shot in the arm with the January announcement that Toyota will build a new assembly plant in South Bexar County. An estimated 2,100 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs are projected with this first phase. Groundbreaking is expected this summer, but "work wont start until next year," said Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. David Gonzalez. Completion is planned for 2005. Members who attended the January meeting made a commitment to the union way when Local 60 became the first local in the Seventh District to overwhelmingly approve support for the Seventh District Construction Organizing Program. The office formed as part of this program will address critical organizing issues district wide. The Brotherhood would like to congratulate several of its newly retired longtime members. They are 40-year members Owen Ray, Hector Najar and Ross Denson, 35-year member George Calvert, 34-year member Robert DeSalme and 30-year member Tommy Freasier. Thanks for your many years of service to the local and the electrical industry, and heres wishing you many years of well-deserved leisure. Allen Vajdos, P.S. L.U. 68 (i), DENVER, CO Under Homeland Security all airports were to have Explosive Detection Devices (E.D.D.) (bomb sniffers) installed by Dec. 31, 2002. For whatever reason, the job at Denver International Airport (DIA) was pushed back until there was virtually no time left. The job bid on Dec. 16, 2002, was awarded on December 17 and our members started working on December 18. On December 28, 2002, 10 days later, 45 Local 68 members met the challenge and finished the task three days ahead of schedule. These members worked 12- to 15-hour days and through the holidays. They installed 15 different services and hard piped all boxes and devices associated with the E.D.D. system. They pulled wire to and terminated all devices. Well not all apparently the only thing that was missing was that the E.D.D.s did not arrive until Jan. 7, 2003, but the electrical system is ready now. Thanks to the hard work and diligence of these members, we have been assured that union electrical contractors will be doing the remaining four phases of the security work at DIA. Daniel J. Curtin, P.S.
L.U. 70 (lctt&o), WASHINGTON, DC We thank all the members who have assisted in our organizing efforts. The information we have obtained from our newly organized members has helped us tremendously. Chesapeake Electrical Systems, Riggs Distler, W. A. Chester and the L. E. Myers Co. have put many newly organized members to work. This is a blessing, especially throughout the winter months when keeping warm and giving to the people in need is imperative to our members. Local 70 is grateful to be able to distribute food certificates and monies from our monthly food drive and 50/50 raffle to members and families in time of need. Lets try to be a part of the solution at work and at home. If you know of a community service or volunteer project where our time and skills are needed, please call the hall with the information. Another COMET class was held in November 2002, and we thank all who participated. If you are interested in attending a class, please call the hall for class information. Our condolences to the families and friends of Bros. Raymond L. Beazley, Wilbur R. Hines, Walter R. Jamerson, Wally T. Ward, Murrel T. Dudley and James A. Lopp, who passed away. Jerome J. Deinlein, Sr., P.S. L.U. 80 (ito&o), NORFOLK, VA Much appreciation is extended to all our traveling brothers and sisters for their help in manning the Ford Assembly Plant shutdown. Although work has slowed somewhat, we look forward to employing travelers on several projects in the spring. We would like to thank Entertainment Chairman Bro. Todd Tyer and his wife, Wendy, for their tireless effort in putting together the Local 80 annual picnic and the childrens Christmas party. Both events were enjoyed by young and old alike. Special thanks to Bro. Jim Holloman (retired) for his many years of entertaining the children as our local Santa. Please remember to work safely and responsibly and continue to display the quality craftsmanship that is the trademark of the IBEW Dennis R. Dasher, P.S.
