November 2002 IBEW Journal Walk to Cure Cancer
L.U. 1505 (em), WALTHAM, MAMembers, along with thousands of other working men and women, participated in the fourth annual "Walk to Cure Cancer" this past Labor Day. The goal of this worthwhile event is to raise $5 million over five years to be used to fund research and equipment needs for the newly constructed AFL-CIO Cancer Research Center that encompasses the fourth floor of the new research laboratory building on the UMASS Medical School campus. Local 1505 Project Coordinator Diane Dube said that last year more than 6,500 people walked the five-mile route (which begins and concludes at the facility) around Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. Michael Noetzel, P.S. New Directions, New Partners The IBEW has a long history of playing a significant role in the development of communities throughout our nation. We stand for everything that is good about Americademocracy, fairness, quality, workmanship, equal opportunity and the chance to live the American dream. But in the South, this tradition was a well-kept secret. Not any longer, the Augusta NECA Chapter and your local union officers have committed to change. We recently participated in "Partners for the 21st Century" partnering sessions. During the initial session, vision and mission statements were developed, along with supporting goals. Panels were then developed, and goals assigned. We sponsored a well-received Chamber of Commerce luncheon where our story was told in the presence of our good friend Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox and approximately 150 members of the business community. Throughout these meetings we have developed a very cooperative and trusting relationship with our contractors and the Augusta NECA Chapter Manager Everett Greenwood. Only by working together can we significantly improve our ability to compete in an ever-changing market. We mourn the loss of Bro. Fred Mays, 51-year member, contractor and friend to all. Our condolences to his family and friends. Dennis Rocque, Pres. Stopping the Non-Union Local 1701 and other building trade unions were well represented, and several representatives spoke. At this writing, a general contractor has not been awarded the project, but we hear H.B. Zachary, a nonunion general contractor from Texas, is in the running to be awarded the project and, if awarded, plans to bring their work force. Hopefully our voices will be heard. The State Group was awarded the Owensboro Municipal Utilities project and will build up to 30 of our members. Industrial Contractors is on site at the Western Kentucky Energy (WKE) Coleman Plant in Hawesville, KY, and Alcan Aluminum in Sebree, KY, is picking up maintenance work. With sadness we report the passing of retired Bro. Fletcher Nance. Bro. Nance leaves sons, retired Bros. Gary and Ted Nance, and one grandson Brent Nance. May he rest in peace. Tim Blandford, P.S. Candidates Forum Guest speakers included H. Carl McCall (running for governor), Charlie King (running for lieutenant governor), and Steffanie Aldersley (running in the 25th Congressional district). Thanks to IBEW Locals 83, 241, 1152, 1249, 1799 and 2084 for attending. Our COPE Committee launched an aggressive "Get out the Vote" campaign. COPE contributions will continue to support union members and all working families of New York. Jeanenne Calieri-Rivera, Asst. B.M.
