Six hundred workers on Guam will receive raises this year following their unanimous ratification of a three-year contract that will bring marked improvement to the workers health and vacation plans.

The workers at the naval contractor voted for IBEW representation in a historic January election victory (See "Guam and Saipan: Pacific Islands Labors New Frontier," July/August 2002 issue, pp. 16-19). Lead negotiator Brian Ahakuelo, assistant business manager, Local 1260, Honolulu, Hawaii, said a tentative agreement was reached in late July following three months of bargaining.

The agreement includes a 3-1/2 percent wage increase the first year, and 3 percent the second and third years of the contract.

Ahakuelo said the IBEW negotiators also bargained better health insurance co-payments.

In August, Local 1260 reached agreement on a first contract for 205 workers employed by Nana Services, a Navy subcontractor. Nana agreed to recognize Local 1260 after the Raytheon election in January at Communications Naval Station Marianas.

The 205 workers provide hospitality services on the base, staffing the naval hospital, golf course, restaurant and lounge. They are cooks, desk clerks, groundskeepers, custodians, servers and laborers.

The three-year agreement includes a 9.5 percent wage increase over three years, a $1,750 bonus over the length of the pact and a 50 percent reduction in employee medical plan contributions.
