Key to House Votes
1. OSHA/Ergonomics This action eliminated the ergonomics rule that organized labor fought to implement for over 10 years. The IBEW position on the vote March 7, 2001: OPPOSE (Yes = Wrong, NO = Right). 4. Economic Stimulus Granted $99.5 billion in federal tax cuts, with 90 percent of the benefits earmarked for tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy. The House passed H.R. 3090 by a vote of 216-214. The IBEW position on the vote October 24, 2001: OPPOSE (Yes = Wrong, No = Right). 7. Trade/Andean Preference Adopted a rule to initiate a conference with the Senate to extend the Andean Trade Preference Act (Fast Track). The IBEW position on the vote June 26, 2002: OPPOSE (Yes=Wrong, No=Right).
2. 2001 Tax Rate Cut President Bushs $958 billion tax bracket change plan drained needed money from education, health care, Social Security and other priorities, giving no tax help to lower-income families. 3. Railroad Retirement This bill would reduce the retirement age from 62 to 60, with full benefits after 30 years of service; expand surviving spouse benefits; reduce the vesting from 10 years to five; and other improvements. 6. Nuclear Waste/Yucca Mountain Approved the site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada as a repository for the nations spent nuclear fuel. The IBEW position on the vote May 8, 2002: SUPPORT (Yes= Right, No=Wrong). 9. Trade/Andean PreferenceConference Report This procedural mechanism prohibits Congress modifying trade pacts; instead, it must vote up or down. This package, which passed 215-212, also includes provisions affecting trade programs for workers hurt by foreign competition.
