L.U. 640 (em,i,rts,spa&u), PHOENIX, AZCongratulations to Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Steven M. Speer and all the recently elected union officers.

Good NewsLocal 640 was designated as the certification and referral local for IBEW Instrumentation and Calibration Technicians in the State of Arizona. It will be necessary to train a certified instructor and purchase needed training equipment.

Our Fourth Annual Golf Tournament will be held at the Superstition Springs Golf Club on October 26. All charitable proceeds will benefit the Hacienda De Los Angeles Extended Medical Care Home.

The locals Annual Family Picnic and Pin Ceremony will be at South Mountain Park on November 9.

Work is still slow, but we remain optimistic. Phoenix was one of the last cities to feel the nations declining economy. It may be a little longer before full employment is regained. Remember the Negotiations Committee will need your input and support during the 2003 contract bargaining.

Annual COPE Raffle
L.U. 648 (em,i,spa&u), HAMILTON, OHOur annual picnic was again a great success. Many thanks to all those who helped and to all the friends of Local 648 that contributed gifts and door prizes.

The Local 648 annual COPE raffle is presently under way to help support "friends of labor" that we so desperately need. For more information, please call the local union office.

Local 648 mourns the deaths of Bros. Chester Miller (42-year member), Charles "Red" Baldwin (56-year member) and Harry Doerr (55-year member). Our condolences to their families and friends. We will sadly miss Chester, Red and Harry.

New Facilities
L.U. 654 (i), CHESTER, PAWe are proud to announce that we have moved into our new hall and training center.

This project has proved the commitment of our membership to a brighter future. Our apprentices now have ample space for their classrooms and shops, and our journeymen now have the resources to continue their training for our ever-changing industry. Our new address is 3729 Chichester Avenue, Boothwyn, PA 19061.

We already have our first graduating class from our new facility. Congratulations to the following graduates from the Commercial/Industrial Program: Phil Bradley, Eric Broadway, Scott Edwards, Jeff Endres, Tim Gibson, Kennard Greene, Mike Harverson, Tom Huston, Phil Kyriakos, Brian McAnulla, Maria Vangel, Joe Presta, Jason Shallis, Kenneth Smith, Scott Williams and Randy Winchester, the Residential Program: Matt DeBarberie, Mike Douglas, Mike Everett, John Ladd, Kevin MacPherson, Colen Miller, Scott ODonnell and Craig Sorrentino, and the Sound and Communications Program: Patrick Conway, Jerry Hubis and Anthony Shadbolt.

Strong Work Mix
L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CAHiring delays for Collins MID Power Plant and Con J. Frankes new hospital job appear to be over, and we have a strong mix of work to carry us into next year. The U.C. Merced free-for-all continues to clear its environmental hurdles.

State licensing has become a reality for California electricians after California Gov. Gray Davis signed Assembly Bill 1087 requiring the certification of all electricians. The deadline for either taking the certification exam or being placed under the Department of Apprenticeship Standards is Jan. 1, 2005.

28 Years Is Enough

Considering the rough economic times, our local has been blessed with steady work. At this writing, we have no journeyman wiremen on Book I.

The Republican Party has held the governors seat in the state of Illinois for the last 28 years. We have the opportunity to elect Rod Blagoyavich governor and end the corporate friendly reign that has burdened this state for so longvote.

Newly Elected Officers
L.U. 704 (catv,em&i), DUBUQUE, IAOur newly elected officers were recently sworn in. They are Pres. Gary Freiburger, Vice Pres. Mark Kaufman, Bus. Mgr. Dan Hammel, Treas. Don Rausch and Rec. Sec. Jason Kolbe. The Executive Board members are Jay Kruse, Todd Aschenbrenner, Sean Leppert, Dave Pregler, Bob Schmidt and Pat Steffen. New Examining Board members are Pat Dietz, Jeff Riniker and Dan Vorwald. The Apprentice Committee representatives are Brian Gill, Ken Muller and Gary Rolwes.

Congratulations also to Bro. Martin Schiessl who was recently organized into our local, and to first-year apprentices recently sworn: Jim Feltes, Tom Robbins, Bob Powers and Jason Cluff.

Special thanks to retired Bros. Milt Avenarius, Bill McGovern, Carl Weimerskirch, Bill Eichman and Carl Oppelt for joining Bro. Jeff Avenarius in providing electrical expertise and professional knowledge to the 49th Annual Dubuque County Fair, a fun-filled, six-day family event.

The Examining Board members are Denise Johnson, Mark Landrum, Tony Orta and Ronnie Robinson. Congratulations to all.

With sadness we report the death of Bro. Mike Frazier, who died of a heart attack in February. Mike was a 21-year member and worked as an organizer for two years. He will be missed.

In March, Pres. Alley awarded IBEW service pins to members with 50, 55, 60, 65 and 75 years of service. Congratulations to all, especially 75-year member Pee Wee Graham.

We won an organizing campaign at Asplundh Tree Experts and have ratified a first agreement.

We started a VDV Teledata Apprenticeship Program and have also begun Watt Women meetings, COMET and Steward classes, Big Brothers and Mentors program, Unity Committee, Community Service Committee and New Member Orientation.
