IBEW Members Don Pink Hardhats, Support Cancer Research

Local 68 members wear pink shirts and hardhats in support of cancer research

In the crisp autumn air blanketing mile-high Denver, leaves turned orange and red last month while many  construction sites exhibited a new hue of their own: pink.

Dozens of Denver Local 68 members working for signatory contractor Dynalectric walked onto the job site every day in October clad in pink hardhats and shirts to show support for curing breast cancer, one of the leading causes of death for women nationwide.

“Everyone knows someone who has been afflicted with the disease,” said Local 68 President Ed Knox:

We have some members in the local who are survivors. It’s something that impacts all of us. The folks at our job sites who wore pink for the month were positive about showing their support.

October was designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985, and pink has long been the official color advocates use to highlight awareness, promote protection through regular screenings and support research for a cure. The hardhats and shirts were supplied by the company.

Management of Dynalectric – which has 11 offices in nine states – encouraged employees to show their support. Said Craig Clark, president and CEO of the company’s Colorado office:

As a company that has built its reputation on being engaged in the concerns of our industry and community, it's gratifying to stand in pink with our electricians to demonstrate support for breast cancer screening and awareness.

Knox said it was “only natural” that so many IBEW members would want to participate in the campaign:

It’s an awesome thing to show to the world. These men and women work hard for a living, and they don’t mind giving their time to make someone else’s life better and brighter.
