Farewell to the Journal
March 5, 2009
The Winter 2009 issue of the Journal is the final issue of the IBEW magazine, the international officers decided in February, making The Electrical Worker the sole print vehicle of the IBEW.
“We are proud of the more than 100 years of IBEW labor journalism represented by the Journal and we plan to continue our union’s tradition of pioneering labor communications in the Electrical Worker and on the Internet,” said IBEW International President Edwin D. Hill in the Journal’s final issue. (The story can be read in its entirety on page 16.)
In 2007, the Journal, which had been published ten times per year (monthly, except for combined issues in January/February and July/August), was cut back to a quarterly publication. At the same time, we initiated a monthly newspaper named after the original publication of the Brotherhood, The Electrical Worker. That meant that active members and retired “A” members received 16 publications a year from the International instead of ten.
Since then, our Web site has made great strides, featuring current news and informative videos along with a great deal of other information. We have made the decision that the resources devoted to a quarterly magazine could best be devoted to other IBEW priorities. The spirit of the Journal, however, is not dead. Instead, the torch of tradition has been picked up by The Electrical Worker, which will soon grow in size and continue to be published monthly. Our commitment to print remains strong.
Our communications program is expanding, not contracting, as is fitting for the times in which we live. It has simply taken a different form, designed to be cost effective and to meet the needs of our members and our Brotherhood in the modern world.
