IBEW/NECA Host Celebration

L.U. 1547 (c,em,i,o,t&u), ANCHORAGE, AKTo celebrate the new year and a new city ice rink, IBEW Local 1547 and the Alaska Chapter of NECA hosted Anchorages first official New Years eve celebration since the millennium celebration in 2000.

The "IBEW/NECA New Years Eve Fire and Ice" celebration included ice-skating, a light show, live music, fire jugglers, miniature sleigh rides and culminated in a 15-minute fireworks display. The New Years Anchorage celebration will be held annually. More than 2,500 people braved freezing temperatures to enjoy the community celebration. The New Years eve fire party is one in a series of joint community events sponsored by IBEW/NECA.

International Paper Project

L.U. 1579 (i&o), AUGUSTA, GAThanks to our members who worked so hard and long on the shutdown at International Paper for MacAljon. The general contractor, Emerson, was very pleased with our work. A quote from the project manager: "If we come back to Augusta and need electricians, I promise we will call you and ask for your members. Thanks." Members, this is organizing; we have shown that we can do the work without problems. This is something all our members can be proud of.

Ground breaking for Global Containment Systems in New Ellington, SC, took place Dec. 8, 2004. We feel somewhat secure this job will go union. Labor was well represented at the ground breaking with the Augusta Building & Trades. Two of our electrical contractors have been working on this project for 18 months. We wish them good luck and pray for their success.

We hope and pray 2005 will mean more work for our members.

We mourn the following members who passed away in 2004: James W. Shipp, Charlie J. Hankinson, Amos J. Tucker, William H. Rhoden, William T. Best, Robert E. Beall and Ed Yaun. We pray for their families. Our brothers will be missed.

Still no word on the electrical work being bid at Western Kentucky Energys Coleman plant. We hope to know more soon.

Organizer Mike Roby has been talking to several people and hopes to sign several VDV contractors soon. Good luck, Mike, in this organizing adventure.

Pres. Tim Blandford and Bus. Mgr. Gary Osborne recognized and awarded service pins to 55-year and 20-year members at our November 2004 meeting. Congratulations to award recipients. The hard work and dedication of these members make us all proud to be IBEW members.

In sadness we report the passing of retired members Randall Alexander and Bob McKenzie. Bro. Alexander was a very active in the VFW and was also a past local union president. May our brothers rest in peace.

L.U. 2273 (rr), ALTOONA, PAOur annual childrens Christmas party was held Dec. 19, with 30 children present for the holiday fun. Hamburgers, hot dogs and fries made up the menu. A magic show provided the entertainment. The grand finale was Santa and Mrs. Claus with gifts for all. Special thanks to Pres./Local Chmn. Ken Kumpf and Exec. Board members John Fischer and Roger Ebersole for making the party a success. These three brothers have been doing this party for years and just love making children smile.

Work looks good for the Juniata Locomotive Shop. Norfolk Southern is still hiring people here and elsewhere. As of this writing a group of new hires is off to Georgia for an eight-week training program at Norfolk Southerns training center. There have been several plant closings in the Altoona area recentlythe latest being SKF Bearing, a union plant. Several of these SKF people have been hired here at Juniata and the few that we have met are just great people. We welcome them aboard and hope to work with them for many years.
