January/February 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 98 (as,em,i&it), PHILADELPHIA, PA-Attending meetings keeps Local 98 members informed, involved and brotherhood alive. Our schedule for monthly meetings: for Sound and Communications, the 2nd Tuesday of each month; Electrical Construction, 4th Tuesday; Broadcasting, 1st Tuesday; and Retirees, the 2nd Tuesday. The Local 98 Web site at www.ibew98.org is also a source of information, with links to sites such as the Local 98 Federal Credit Union, a view of the latest "98 News," the calendar of events, journeyman training and charity work. Summer ended with a picnic at Clemonton Park attended by 4,000 members and our annual Local 98 golf outing attended by 200-plus members. Fall benefit events included the annual scholarship banquet, awarding $1,000 grants, and the walk for diabetes, organized by Apprentice Instructor Bob Hasty. Local 98 made a big endorsement for the reelection of Mayor John Street. Bus. Mgr. John Dougherty thanks all who helped in the elections. Work projections for 2004 are promising for Local 98. The Phillies stadium is ongoing and two new large schools and a police barracks in Bucks County will go union. John J. Killoran, P.S. L.U. 99 (govt&i), PROVIDENCE, RI-Another tremendous year in Local 99. Hundreds of traveling brothers and sisters found work in our local. Now is the time for every member to rally behind the organizing drive to continue our prosperity of recent years. We salute the men and women who attended our Nov. 2 breakfast and organizing campaign for Cox Communications employees. They are made of the very fabric that we recognize as great future union members. I for one would be proud to have them join our ranks. "If the workers took a notion they could stop all speeding trains; every ship upon the ocean they can tie with mighty chains. Every wheel in the creation, every mine and every mill; fleets and armies of the nation, will at their command stand still." -Joe Hill Joe Walsh, P.S. L.U. 100 (c,em,I,o,rts&st), FRESNO, CA-The Community Hospital project by Howe Electrich consists of the Trauma Center, Central Plant and High Voltage Loop System. The $25 million project involved 150,000 man-hours. Tim Teare reports the job is 75 percent complete, with a target completion date of June 2004. Future plans through 2015 include two 10-story nursing complexes, a six-level parking garage and an ambulatory center. The Ninth District Sound and Communication Agreement was ratified effective Dec. 1. Bus. Mgr. Larry Kellerhals reports an overall 6 percent increase in inside wireman man-hours for 2003, the fifth year in a row our overall man-hours have increased. Ten teams participated in our annual golf tournament and Local 1245, Walnut Creek, CA, took first place. Local 100 is saddened to report the following deaths of active and retired brothers in 2003: Charles "Lee" Golden, John C. Warrick, Mic Warrick, Albert A. Klein, Al "Yogi" Hurst, Ronald J. Loen, Alfred McElroy, Thomas Jackson, Robert M. Thompson, Ed Frantz Sr., Keith Eastby, Glen Bedgood and Keith Goodwin. General meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. M.A. Caglia, P.S. L.U. 103 (cs&i), BOSTON, MA-Once again, members of Local 103 have responded overwhelmingly with their time and generosity. Some 800 family, friends and union members attended the John Abdou Family Benefit. More that $70,000 was raised for John's widow, Denise, and their four children, John, Christopher, Joseph and Juliann. All proceeds from the raffle tickets went directly to the Abdou family. John's tragic death is a reminder of how dangerous our business/livelihood is. Safety is paramount. The Local 103 softball team fundraiser was a Wolftones concert that delighted 500 people and helped defer the costs of running the team. The JATC program took in over 1,200 applications for the electrical apprenticeship program, and 300 for telecommunications. Each year Local 103 offers, through the AFL-CIO Scholarship Program, four $5,000 Scholarships. Two scholarships are awarded to two daughters and two are awarded to two sons of Local 103 members. The exam is in February. Bill Molineaux, P.S.
L.U. 110 (em,i,rts, spa&u), ST. PAUL, MN-We have 150 members on Book I-it will be a difficult winter for many brothers and sisters. The accompanying photo shows the first class from the Local 110 JATC to complete a control and instrument class, which offers preparation for the IBEW-UA-EPRI Control & Instrument Certification Level I test. What is EPRI? Threatened by Senate proposals in 1971 to create a federal agency to conduct electricity-related R&D, America's public and private utilities banded together to develop an industry-organized alternative-the Electric Power Research Institute, now known simply as EPRI. Together the IBEW, EPRI and UA (Pipe Fitters) are training and certifying control and instrument technicians. Steve White, P.S. |
