A New Year!

Local 231 member
Ronald Honhoff at his
retirement party.

L.U. 231 (i,rtb, spa&u), SIOUX CITY, IA-What will the New Year bring? Indications are that work will slow down. But as of now work is still holding, probably due to the mild start to the winter. Local contractors still have good-sized jobs winding up, and work probably will not pick up again until spring.

Congratulations to 30-year member Ronald Hunhoff on his retirement. We wish him much happiness. Organizer Donald Neill Miller, a 40-year member, also retired in 2003. Thanks for all the years of hard work.

We mourned the unexpected loss of Jack O'Dell in August 2003. He was at the racetrack in Norwalk, OH, doing what he loved, racing with his boys. Jack and his sons owned and raced their own cars under the name "O'Dell Electric Racing." Anyone who worked for Jack knows he was a hard working and fair man-he only expected 110 percent from everyone who worked for him. He will be missed.

Organizing Outreach

At Local 236's 2003 Golf Outing, the
winning foursome: from left, Mike
Pinkerton, Kevin Bourassa, Dean
Garafalo and Paul Toth.

L.U. 236 (catv, ees, govt,i,mo,rtb&t), ALBANY, NY-The 2003 annual golf outing was again a big success. Nineteen foursomes turned out for a great day of golf. Chmn. Phil Pacifico thanks everyone for their support and participation, with special thanks to Paul Toth, Dean Garafalo, Bob Wilkie and Dave Keenan. This year two foursomes tied for first place, both shooting a 10 under par. The tiebreaker went to Paul Toth, Dean Garafalo, Kevin Bourassa and Mike Pinkerton. Todd Garneau, Graig Taylor, Jason Cooper and Scott Delise were runners up. Close to pins were Dan Devlin and Ed Curcuritto. Longest drives were by Rich Bedel and Steve Bomberger.

While the economy floundered in 2003 our organizing campaign reached out to a number of former non-union journeymen and apprentices who are now enjoying the fruits of a union way of life. We hope our organizing efforts this year are even more successful.

Take Back the White House

L.U. 245 (govt, lctt,o,rtb&u), TOLEDO, OH-Fall of 2003 saw negotiations concluded at Tri-County Co-op and Outside Construction and still ongoing with Hancock/Wood, a newly organized co-op. In late 2003 we began negotiations with Channel 11, our CBS affiliate. Later in 2004 we will be in negotiations with First Energy, our biggest employer.

Outside work is unexpectedly good right now. Our members are working lots of overtime on all fronts for now. We hope by press time to have all our generator units running, including Davis Besse, which just entered month 22 of its refueling outage.

We must take back the White House! Now is the time to start preparing our membership. Start with the Supreme Court decision that put Bush in office. Remind members of the deception that took us to war and caused the loss of our loved ones, while lucrative contracts to rebuild these war-torn countries are being dealt out to the biggest campaign contributors. Also remind fellow members of the attack on overtime pay for working people.

This class was moving into a new school when fire struck and destroyed the building. The students moved back into the old school while the new building was redesigned and rebuilt. Open house was held a year later, Nov. 9, 2002, with 800 area businesspeople, politicians and trade union members attending. Local 252 has a lot to be proud of-a new school, dedicated instructors and highly qualified graduates.

Volunteers Light Displays

Local 254 volunteers, families and friends
installed the Calgary Festival of Lights
display at Confederation Park. ENMAX Power
Corp. loaned bucket trucks and donated
power for the display.

L.U. 254 (ees,em,mo,rts&u), CALGARY, AB, CANADA-On Saturday, Nov. 1, several members, families and friends of Local 254 Calgary volunteered their time to erect the Lions Club annual Christmas "Festival of Lights" display at Confederation Park.

ENMAX Power Corp. supports this great display by loaning the use of its bucket trucks to set up and take down the decorations, and donating the 350kW of power per hour required to light up the 72,000 bulbs on 3,000 strings of lights. This display is lit from Nov. 29 to Jan. 8.

Our two City of Medicine Hat units also volunteer their time to set up a Christmas display as part of a Victorian Village Theme.

Local 254's head office is in Calgary with satellite offices in Stony Plain and Medicine Hat. Our local comprises 10 individual units representing 18 separate collective agreements across central and southern Alberta. We look forward to co-hosting the IBEW All Canada Progress Meeting with the IBEW First District in August 2004.
