Great Strides

L.U. 1191 (u), WEST PALM BEACH FL-Local 1191 officers, Executive Board members, press secretary and everyone associated with the everyday operations of the local would like to express appreciation for all the hard work our members gave in making 2003 a success for the union.

With the help of the membership, the local made great strides in the areas of safety and community affairs. We also saw an increase in the number of people who volunteered to help in TSC, LJASC and the many different committees that work behind the scenes to keep the local running smoothly. Member support is vital.

Everyone has done a terrific job turning in contract proposals. The Executive Board will review all proposals and make recommendations on the most important concerns. Every proposal received was copied onto a disc and presented to the System Council for review.

See you at our next union meeting and don't forget to visit our web page at: www.ibewlu1191.org.

Go, Amy, Go

L.U. 1220 (rtb), CHICAGO, IL-4:18:37 is not time code. It is the time it took Local 1220 member Amy Myrick to run a 40-K marathon. She came in number 1,261, "just behind the winner," Amy said.

Her fellow Local 1220 CBS news camera people, who were responsible for local, national, and international coverage, cheered Amy on. "Photographers were posted in every neighborhood of the race," Amy said. "I'd give a shout when I saw our IBEW crews' live truck masts sticking out over the horizon. Just when I thought my heart was going to quit ticking I'd hear somebody yell 'GO AMY!' and that's truly what kept me going.

Amy founded the Chicagoland Carcinoid Support Group after her father, Steve Myrick, died of the disease in 2001. The group sponsored Amy and raised $10,000. "It's the best way to honor my dad," Amy said.

'A Real Boost'

Local 1253 members received years-of-service pins
in November 2003: From left, Jeff Dauphinee (for
30 years), Walter Morris (35 years), Earl Wallace
(35 years), John Nason (30 years), Norman
Rodrigue (30 years), Jeff Rose (30 years), Robert
Gray (30 years), Robert Thompson (35 years),
and Roger Lockhart (30 years).

L.U. 1253 (i), AUGUSTA, ME-Several members of Local 1253 and several travelers from across the country recently finished phase one of a paper machine rebuild at International Paper in Jay, ME. This was a real boost for members who have been out of work.

This project presented many challenges for our members-it was not just any non-union paper mill. This particular mill has a history of anti-union activities that books have been written about. Several members who took this call were directly affected by these activities some 16 years ago. The fact that the start-up went without any discrepancies electrically speaks volumes about the pride and professionalism these members possess.

I would like to share an important thought with fellow members throughout the IBEW: When we are faced with difficult challenges, such as this one certainly was, please keep in mind that unorganized potential members (not rats) are watching. Attitude, skill and knowledge are what separate us from non-union.

Strong Spirit of Unity

Local 1289 members at Oyster Creek Nuclear
Generating Station went on strike from May 22-
Aug. 11, 2003.

L.U. 1289 (u), LAKEWOOD, NJ-Our members at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station went on strike from May 22 to Aug. 11, 2003.

During that time many IBEW locals gave such financial support that members were able to have two food banks and were also assisted with some of their financial obligations. Donations were received from many System Council U-3 affiliated locals, IBEW business agents and International officers and representatives.

Thank you, brothers and sisters!

Ed Stroup, Pres./B.M.

New Contract Ratified

L.U. 1307 (u), SALISBURY, MD-On Sept. 16, 2003, the membership employed by A&N Electric Cooperative ratified a new three-year contract. The contract includes 4 percent wage increases for each of the three years, which brings the journeyman lineman rate to $27.18, $28.27 and $29.40 for each respective year.

Improvements were made in funeral leave and changes were made in the medical insurance plan. Language was added to accommodate employees requiring mandated training that requires travel. Changes also were made in the administration of vacation, along with language regarding the future of certain classifications.

Thanks for a job well done to Negotiating Committee members: Jane Daisey, Len Mapp, Bryan Evans and Pres. Mike Dennis.

The current Bush administration has poorest record on jobs lost in the last 50 years. We can't stand another four years in this direction. Get involved and make a stand. The job you save may be your own.

Contract Negotiations

L.U. 1340 (i&o), NEWPORT NEWS,VA-We have been blessed with full employment up to the first of the year. and 2004 will be a busy year of negotiations for most of our units.

Local 1340 won a representation election at Waco Inc. Oct. 29, and contract negotiations are scheduled to begin in January. Thanks to Organizer John Strang for all his work on this campaign. Thanks also to Mike Rocko and the rest of our salts for all their efforts. This company used some pretty nasty tactics.

As usual, our retirees have been especially helpful over the past year. Retirees assisted at the Relay for Life, the walk for diabetes, Bay Days, etc. We appreciate all their contributions to the local.
