September 2003 IBEW Journal L.U. 37 (em,o&u), FREDERICTON, NB, CANADAThe process of bringing Locals 1733 and 2309 together to fit the structure of NB Power has been completed and our newly elected Executive Board members are: Allison Porter; Reginald LeBlanc, Larry Bailey, Stephen Hayes, President; Douglas Wallace, Larry Calhoun, Asst. Bus Mgr.; Ross Galbraith, Asst. Bus. Mgr.; Romeo Bourque, Cathy Shea, Peggy Galbraith, Rec. Sec.; Serge Noel, Donald St Pierre, Gaetan Chiasson, Gerard Kenna, Michael Proud, Claude Richard, Bus. Agent; Gordon Simpson, Vice Pres; Wade Greenlaw, Bus. Mgr.; Alan Seeley, Treas.; and Terry Ellis. Originally, there were two Locals 1733 and 2309, sharing office space and representing many employees of NB Power. It was decided that it was in the best interest of the members of both locals to amalgamate and align themselves with the corporate restructuring of NB Power. Both the Corporation and Union recognized that the existing configuration of bargaining units did not allow each other to address their diverse interests. Int. Vice Pres. Don Lounds agreed and presented this to Int. Pres. Ed Hill who merged the two locals. Several months ago, NB Power and Local 37 started joint discussions with the New Brunswick Labour and Employment Board with the mutual goal of obtaining approval for a new, more effective bargaining unit structure. The Labour and Employment Board endorsed our proposal to restructure the bargaining units to reflect the new business unit structure of NB Power. Doug Wallace, P.S. L.U. 41 (em,es,i,se&spa), BUFFALO, NYBus. Mgr. James A. Voye announced his retirement effective August 1, 2003. Jim has been in the forefront representing the best interests of IBEW members and all working people. A member since 1965, Bro. Voye worked many years as a journeyman wireman before becoming an assistant business manager in 1989. He served on the Local 41 Executive Board and has been Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. for 10 years, during which Local 41 has prospered, benefiting from his leadership and dedication. Jim is well respected by labor, business and politicians in the area. He has served on the AFL-CIO Executive Committee and on Rep. Jack Quinns Labor Circle, serving western New York. The members of Local 41 wish Jim and his family a long and healthy retirement. The Local 41 Executive Board appointed Bro. John Pavlovic to fill the remaining term as business manager/financial secretary. We at Local 41 know we are in good hands with his abilities and leadership. Charles P. More, P.S. L.U. 47 (lctt,mo,u&uow), DIAMOND BAR, CALocal 47 won a representation election for the Water and Wastewater workers at the City of Colton. The vote was held on June 11 and will bring 25 new members to our local. Fun, food and friendly competition were the order of the day at the annual Local 47/Southern California Edison Linemans Rodeo in Irwindale June 14. Competing along with the teams from SCE were teams from Riverside, LADWP, SDG&E, and PARR Electric. The winning linemans team from SCE was Steve Lekvold, Bryan Lee and Bruce Gossett. The winning apprentices were Bros. Matt and Brian Burnett from SCE. The states budget issues are significant as the governor and legislature struggle to fill a multibillion-dollar shortfall that, if not resolved, will affect some of our public sector employees. The deficit is due primarily to the states failed electrical deregulation scheme passed before Gray Davis became governor, but the deficit has nonetheless helped the radical fringe of the Republican Party to aggressively pursue a recall of Gov. Davis, starting only months after he was elected to a second term. Labor around the state is rallying behind the governor to protect the decision of the voters in the last election. Stan Stosel, P.S. L.U. 53 (lctt,o,rts&u), KANSAS CITY, MOWe welcome the employees of the City of Butler, MO, as our most recent organized unit. Local 53 Pres./Org. Steve White assisted as this unit of 28 voted overwhelmingly for the union. We congratulate these new members and wish them well in their upcoming efforts to negotiate their first contract. Congratulations also go out to our newest journeymen to graduate from the Missouri Valley Program. They are Rick Ferwalt, Ray Huff, Chris Huffstutter, Tommy Dryer, Howard Potter and Andy Twyman. The locals Annual Crappie Tournament was held in May with a good turnout, the weather cooperating and the fish biting. Brothers Gary Spoor and Roger Wainwright took first place, followed by the teams of Drerup & Pritchett, Rowden & Fisher and Lungstum & Lungstum. The Local 53 picnic in June had a smaller than expected turnout. This is a really fun event with lots of good food and door prizes and especially the opportunity to visit with members from all units. It is one event we should all try to attendhope to see YOU next year. Finally, we congratulate Jack Barton, Larry Wilson and Paul Crocker on winning the tickets to the Truck & IRL Races at the Kansas Speedway. We hope they enjoy a good time at the races. Duane Pearce, P.S.
L.U. 71 (lctt,o&rtb), COLUMBUS, OHWork is slower than normal for this time of year. Every unit that we represent has been affected by a slow economy. For the first time in over 20 years, the number of tree trimmers working in the Cincinnati area has been reduced. Our Teledata membership has been seriously impacted with Ameritech awarding contracts to out-of-state and non-IBEW employers. Our broadcasting and outside line construction units remain steady, however our utility and outside commercial work appears to be slowing down. Fewer hours being reported to our health care fundadded to runaway medical and drug costsmeans less earning potential for our members. The Executive Board recently appointed Bros. John Crabtree as treasurer, H. Nelson Duncan as recording secretary and Dave Sugerik to the Executive Board. Our new officers will serve the local well and were proud to have these dedicated brothers serve the interest of our members. But the local needs your participation to keep us strong.
