John Healy Mourned

Bro. John P. Healy, business manager of Local 313.

L.U. 313 (i&spa), WILMINGTON, DEOn Friday, the 6th of June, Bus. Mgr. John P. "Pat" Healy lost his life in a single-vehicle accident at the age of 52.

Brother Healy joined Local 313 in 1973 and spent 12 years as an instructor for the JATC and as a board member of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority, before being elected business manager in 1996. He also served as chairman of the Eastern Pennsylvania Business Manager Association, Executive Board member of the Delaware Building Trades Council and the Delaware State AFL-CIO. Pat not only worked hard for the members of the IBEW, which he represented, but for all of organized labor in Delaware and was selected as vice chair of the Democratic Party. He quickly developed a reputation in the community as someone who could get the job done. Whether it was organizing a fund raising dinner for the Democratic Party or promoting the advantages of using organized labor to businesses here in Delaware, Pat took on every challenge and succeeded. His communication and people skills helped him to bring people together and work toward a common goal that otherwise might not have been possible.

Pat will be deeply missed by those who knew and worked with him. Our deepest sympathy and prayers go to his wife, Lois, and four daughters.

Getting Ready for 100

L.U. 349 (em,i,mps, rtb, spa&u), MIAMI, FLThe work picture is slow. A few of the bigger jobs are hiring some.

We are gearing up for our locals 100th Anniversary in April 2004. The entertainment committee is working hard to have a good show.

Good job, Florida Keys co-op! They sponsored a basketball game for charity, final score: Marathon Generating 42, Tavernier Generating 41 and raised $2,000 for the Marathon Youth Club, which will use it to purchase football equipment.

On April 7, Bro. Penny Sizemore passed away. He was business manager, apprenticeship director and NECA chapter manager and those who knew him will miss Bro. Sizemore.

Workers Memorial Day

Local 351 members who lost their lives while working on the redevelopment of Atlantic City are listed on tombstone.

L. U. 351 (c,cs,i,it,lcct,mt,o,se,spa&t), FOLSOM, NJOur observation of Workers Memorial Day April 28 was in Atlantic City, hosted by Local 351 Bus. Agent Roy M. Foster, who is also president of the Atlantic & Cape May County AFL-CIO.

Workers Memorial Day honors all union members who lost their lives during the redevelopment of Atlantic City. Building trades members, along with many local and state political leaders, joined in the procession from the Convention Center to the location where the monument was dedicated in 1998. Sadly, there are three IBEW Brothers Edward W. Haig (Local 211), Albert D. Beaney (Local 211), Craig D. Watkins (Local 351) and one IBEW Sister Jacqueline Pronovost (Local 210), named on this monument. These members are missed and will always be remembered.

Union Proud

L.U. 357 (c,i,mt,o&se), LAS VEGAS, NVGreetings from Local 357, Las Vegas. Unit 1 members voted overwhelmingly in May in favor of the ratification of the new inside agreement. Thanks to all the members who participated.

I hope the readers will bear with me this month, as I feel compelled to voice my opinion on brotherhood. As a kid, I remember my father (a 40-year member) calling my mother from the job and asking her to make a special dinner, as he was bringing home a traveling brother, who had been on the road for months, for a home cooked meal. My first day of work on an IBEW job, at least four members asked me if I needed some cash until payday, if I had a lunch, or a place to stay. It was common to donate a days wages to a brother or sister in need.

What happened to caring for your fellow brother or sister? The feeling of friendship, generosity and of belonging to the finest organization in the world should be the things we teach and pass on to all the new members. So, grab a new member, bring them to the next meeting, show them the objects of the IBEW in the front of your Constitution, and get them involved. So until next time, be union, be proud and God Bless America.

Dale T. Walsh, P.S.
