Welcome New Journeymen

L.U. 193 (i,lctt,o,rts, spa&u), SPRINGFIELD, ILThis year Local 193 welcomes 13 apprentices taking the next step in their careers and becoming certified journeymen. They are Jerrad Frank, Silvio Galassi, Paul Mantei, Steve Nowack, Chris Schwab, Roy Sloan Jr., Nicholas Weaver, Brent Anthalony, Chris Fairfield, Henry Horrighs, Jay Weiskopf, John Impson and Jan Cimarossa.

Like previous classes, they are a testament to the abilities of the JATC to hire the best possible people and also to the dedicated instructors who teach the apprentices to be the best they can be. We wish all the new journeymen the best of luck in their careers and hope that they continue to work safelyfor their own benefit and for those they work with.

All of us at Local 193 hope you and yours had a safe and happy Labor Day, and had the opportunity to participate in your local Labor Day parades and activities. Please visit our Web site at www.ibew193.com.

Retiring & Graduating

L.U. 231 (i,rtb, spa&u), SIOUX CITY, IAThe work picture has slowed a bit but has the potential to regain some momentum after some of the new projects take off.

Two of our former business agents are retiring: Donald "Neill" Miller and Gary Gilbert. Bro. Miller was our latest organizer and Bro. Gilbert served as an Int. Rep. for the Eleventh District. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication over the years and we hope you enjoy many happy years of retirement.

Joe Hallum says, "Hello from Alaska!" He was a former Local 231 member until 1974 and left to join Local 1547 in Anchorage, AK. He finally retired in 1994. His e-mail address is rojo@gci.net if anyone would like to drop him a line.

Congratulations to our recent graduates from the JATC program. High Tech Electric received an award from Entrepreneur magazine, they made it into the "Hot 100."

Political Action

L.U. 275 (catv,em&i), MUSKEGON, MIWork has picked up a little with the warm months but not as much as we would like. Many members have been laid off for quite a while now with not much evidence of relief in the near future.

Many local and state elections are taking place this fall, so lets make sure all of our members vote. We cannot allow ourselves to lie dormant between presidential elections. Every election and voting issue is important and will affect workingmen and women.

Tony Barnes, our assistant business agent, has been working very hard on an organizing campaign here and we would like to thank Tony for all his hard workregardless of the outcome. We really appreciate your effort. Many local members have been helping with this campaign as well so we would also like to thank them for their help.

L.U. 291 (i,o,rtb&rts), BOISE, IDAt the time of this writing, our work picture is slow. Currently there are 175 on Book I and 40 on Book 2. However, we are seeing a few calls trickle through the hall with a few projects on the horizon.

Congratulations are in order for the 2003 graduating class: Nick Berry, Brayson Buckner, Aaron Hall, Chris Keen, Scott Kidwell, Dale Kinney, Marcus Mitchell, Joe Morgan, David Nelson, Jose Ochoa and Bradley Stoner. Scott Kidwell was selected to represent the local in the annual Western States Electrical Contest to be held in San Francisco this year. We know the local will be well represented and in good hands with Scott.

Recently we have lost a couple of standup brothers, Keith Barnum and Jim McConville. They were great role models and natural leaders, selfless men who were at the forefront of the labor movement. Their presence will be sorely missed in the local, as well as in the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families.
