Members Score High Marks

L.U. 502 (c,em,i,it&t), ST. JOHN, NB, CANADAAt this writing, work is still slow. The unusually cold and snowy winter has put the Coleson Cove Project a bit behind schedule, but the hiring should begin soon. The Irving refinery is driving pilings for a de-sulphurization project, with talk of the co-gens still in ongoing discussions.

Congratulations to the 100 members who completed a structured cabling course with a pass rate of 98 percent, a mark not achieved by any other class that NORDX/CDT has trained. The WHMIS and Construction Safety courses have been a success, and we now have about 75 percent of the local members trained.

The local is doing its annual charity functions with the Play Ball for St. Josephs softball game to help purchase medical equipment for a local hospital. The David Chilton Memorial Bass Tournament is also scheduled for June and is a great time for members who attend. The summer picnic will be held on July 12, so come out and have a great time.

Savannahs Finest

L.U. 508 (i,it&o), SAVANNAH, GAWith the departure of the U.S. Third Infantry Division for Iraq, many here feel as if our own family has departed with them. In some cases, its the immediate family.

The "Tankers" as they are affectionately known along "River Street," became a common sight in downtown Savannah and part of many festivities like our annual St. Patricks Day celebration.

The home where they live, work and train is Fort Stewart, about 30 miles southwest of Savannah. Many of our members became well acquainted with these fine fighting men and women of the Third ID while working at the base hospital, maintenance facilities and billets for the soldiers. Always courteous, we were all impressed by the thorough, physical and constant training.

At the gates of Baghdad, the "Rock of the Marne" has once again made their mark in military history. Our hearts and prayers are with these fine service men and women and their families. God speed.

New Business Manager

Bus. Mgr. James Barry, Pres. Doug Parsons
and retired Int. Rep. Bill Warchow.

L.U. 586 (em,i&o), OTTAWA, ON, CANADAWe have a new business manager, Bro. James Barry, who was overwhelmingly endorsed by the membership. He has appointed Bro. Bert Olmstead as his assistant and Bro. John Bourke as organizer.

Bus. Mgr. Barry and his assistants all have extensive union leadership experience and together they recently organized three shops with 35 men. Bringing in these men and jobs is much appreciated, and we believe there are more to come. They have also started a monthly stewards meeting to keep all stewards informed and educated.

Bro. Bert Olmstead was sent by the Canadian government to Chile in South America as a "Job Safety Certified Worker" to give a presentation on promoting a safe workplace while improving productivity. He was representing both the Ottawa Building Trades and Local 586. He reports that he was well received and enjoyed enlightening both the people in Chile and the government dignitaries who accompanied him. Congratulations, Bert!

Our sports teams have both done very well. See page 16 in the January-February IBEW Journal for more information.

Our work picture for the past few years has suffered from medium unemployment, but the list of jobs starting and being planned give hope that this condition will soon change.

Jobs Still Being Bid

L.U. 596 (i,o&u), CLARKSBURG, WVInvitations have been mailed for the IBEW Local 596 picnic to be held on July 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park in Clarksburg. Please make sure to return the RSVP card to the hall.

Projected work for this year has gotten off to a slow start. Two new hospitals, a coal fired power station and a new womens prison are going through the permit stage. The local union and the Building Trades Council are working with all the parties involved to get the permits approved. Lets hope the work picks up early this fall.

L.U. 606 (em,es,i,rtb, spa&u), ORLANDO, FLCongratulations to Sister Teresa Alcantar for winning the "Florida All American Success Story" award. The awards ceremony took place in the Capitol Building in Tallahassee. Sister Alcantar represented the apprenticeship for the entire state of Florida.

The Orlando Labor Management Cooperative Committee (OLMCC) is working diligently on improving the image of organized labor and union contractors through career fairs, hosting electrical safety related classes and participation in the JATC graduation. The OLMCC will play a key role in the NECA National Convention in October 2003. The new JATC building is moving along with the direct help of retired Bro. Roger Poitras.
