L.U. 164 (c,i,o&t), JERSEY CITY, NJMembers attended the annual VDV/Integrated Building Systems Conference in March. Local 164 was the only IBEW local asked to present a seminar at the conference. The open-to-all session, entitled "LON Works for The Real World," was led by Training Dir. Dave Milazzo; Asst. Training Dir. Paul Lagana and Instructor Richard Paredes. Providing a basic introduction to LON Works networks and protocols, the seminar also included LON Works control and integration. In addition, open system design requirements and network platforms for distributed control systems and sub-systems were explored. At the conference exhibition, Local 164 also showcased its display booth entitled "Training Today for Tomorrows Technologies." The display booth highlights the close working relationship between our electrical and telecommunications divisions, as well as the expertise of Local 164 members in the installation of VDV Systems and the latest Local Operating Control and Automation Systems. It remains our desire to encourage NECA contractors in the New Jersey area to bid projects that incorporate these high-tech systems, which will serve as the foundation of our industrys future. Local 164 remains committed to partnering with our loyal signatory contractors by providing highly trained electrical and telecommunications technicians who possess the advanced skills necessary to fulfill the sophisticated demands within todays high-tech marketplace. David Milazzo, Pres. L.U. 196 (govt,mt,o,t&u), ROCKFORD, ILThe outside construction was looking real good in February, but now we have slowed down slightly at this time however. We finished negotiating our outside agreement with American Line Builders NECA, and feel it went very well. I would like to thank our negotiating team for a job well done. I would also like to thank all our utilities and outside construction members for there help in our organizing efforts. All those phone calls from you DO help. We have had great success in organizing this past year and intend to continue. We won an election in the City of Batavia, IL, to represent the Street Department and are in negotiations at this time. We signed 29 new contractors doing outside construction and/or telephone work in the past 18 months. This has helped create new job opportunities for our members and we have been able to increase our membership. Remember to attend all your local union meetings and register to vote so you can vote in EVERY election. Edgar R. Mings, Jr., B.M.
L.U. 210 (u), ATLANTIC CITY, NJOn Jan. 22, 2003, Local 210 celebrated its 100th Anniversary at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ, with close to 300 in attendance. Among those present were Int. Pres. Edwin Hill, Int. Sec./Treas. Jeremiah OConnor, Third Dist. Int. Vice Pres. Donald Siegel, past and present members and officers, and representatives from Conectiv and The City of Vineland. It was a festive evening with entertainment provided by the Local 3 Sword of Light Pipe Band, who performed magnificently and deserve our most sincere thanks. Local 210 also thanks all who attended and helped in making this event the success it was. Condolences to the family of Bro. Irv Simpkins, a former Executive Board member and shop steward, who passed away in February 2003. Remember to attend your monthly union meetings and above all elsealways work safe. Arthur "Mitch" Mason, Pres./P.S.
L.U. 222 (o), ORLANDO, FLWe recently finalized our Asplundh Tree agreement and are signing up members of the new unit. On Aug. 7, 2002, Local 222 moved from the Gainesville office, where we have been renting for the past 10 years, to our new building in Reddick, FL. The membership overwhelmingly approved the lease purchase agreement, where we will own the building and 7.5 acres of prime land. Organizer Dale Smithmier and Fifth District Outside Organizer Bill Hitt were recently successful in two good organizing campaigns. Putnam Engineering Inc. and Gayco have both signed a letter of assent. We welcome these new employers, and have pledged to see them both grow and prosper as union contractors. Congratulations to Bros. Marvin Apte, John Gaffney, Clyde Parker and Murl Price for receiving their IBEW 50-year service pins and certificates. It is with sadness that I report the death of Bro. George "Gator" Gaston. He was an IBEW member for over 30 years and will be missed. Our condolences to his family and friends. Please attend the union meetings and always work SAFE!! Dale Smithmier, P.S.
L.U. 230 (c,catv,em,i,mar&u), VICTORIA, BC, CANADABus. Mgr. Phil Venoit and I discussed local issues, future plans and goals with First Dist. Int. Vice Pres. Don Lounds at a recent First District sponsored "Basic Arbitration" course. The seminar was held in Victoria, BC, and was the first conference hosted by newly elected Bus. Mgr. Venoit. Bus. Mgr. Venoit said the discussions were very positive and the course was well worth the time invested. Being able to conduct our own arbitrations will save a great deal in legal fees, allowing us to put money into priorities like organizing. Dave Thompson, Asst. B.M.
