Vandals Burn the Hall

Prince Georges County Fire
Department investigators gather
evidence of arson at the Local 70,
Washington, DC, office after it was
vandalized and set on fire.

L.U. 70 (lctt&o), WASHINGTON, DCOur Local 70 building at the Forestville, MD, location was vandalized and suffered severe fire damage in August. The Prince Georges County Fire Department (PGCFD) responded. PGCFD investigators established via eyewitnesses that the fire was deliberately set, and gathered evidence that will help find and prosecute the culprits who committed this felony.

Although some business may be hindered, we will prevail. We are hopeful that by the time you read this our Forestville, MD, office will be restored enough to continue training, educational programs, monthly meetings and other business as usual.

The officers, staff and members sincerely thank the local unions and members who graciously offered an extensive variety of assistance in our time of need.

The newly elected officers are Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. James "Wes" Spruill, Pres. Thomas Meisling, Vice Pres. Jerome "Jerry" Deinlein, Sr., Rec. Sec. Leroy Platter, Treas. Thomas Morsell and Executive Board members Chris Brown, Daniel Hallowell, Robert Terry and Danny Wallace and Examining Board member Robert "Ringo" Adkins. Congratulations to all.

Our condolences to the families of Bros. George W. Debord, Howard A. Hertzog and William "Butch" H. Ayres, who passed away.

Jerome Deinlein, Sr., V.P./P.S.

Favorable Ruling
L.U. 84 (o,t&u), ATLANTA, GAWe have received the Administrative Law Judges ruling on the Unfair Labor Practices Board charges filed on the "Work Place Ethics Program" and the "Crew Leader Selection Committee." The judge ruled that Georgia Power Company violated the law when it established these committees, and has ordered the company to cease and desist from these practices. The company plans to appeal, and we will pursue the enforcement of this ruling through the proper channels. The company is continuously trying to circumvent the collective bargaining process by creating employee committees to keep from addressing work issues with the union. I urge each and every union member not to volunteer on any employee committee until approved by the union.

The outside work situation is slow at this time, but we will need substation technicians in the near future. There are plans to build several new substations in Georgia over the next couple of years.

The local needs your help to gather retirees names, addresses and phone numbers for an updated address list and directory. If you are a retired member, please contact the business office to verify your information to ensure that you will receive important information of interest to retirees.

Our Season of Giving

Some of the Local 98, Philadelphia, PA, members and
family who participated in the Bike "A" Thon to raise
money for cancer research.

L.U. 98 (as,em,i&it), PHILADELPHIA, PALocal 98s success can be attributed to the dedication of its members. Throughout the year the brothers and sisters of Local 98 volunteer their time in community and political endeavors.

Participants in the Walk for The Cure in September, which raised $20,000 for diabetes included Pat Croce and our own Larry Cross, who sang the National Anthem at the start of the walk. The Maloneys Bike "A" Thon, organized yearly by Local 98s Joe Cotton, raised thousands of dollars for cancer research. The Gilda Radner House, which provides aid to breast cancer patients, is being built in Horsham, PA, and all labor and material is being donated by Local 98 and NECA.

Other events in September included two nights with the Phillies and the Local 98 Golf Tournament. The Apprentice Training Banquet and the Annual Health Fair were held in October. The annual Health Fair includes multiple health screenings for members and their families, and the American Red Cross Bloodmobile was also available for donations. All attendees were asked to bring a new toy for the Toys for Tots Program.

Bus. Mgr. John Dougherty thanks all Local 98 members for their volunteerism and giving in all seasons. Happy Holidays!

Accredited Entry Program

Local 100, Fresno, CA, members working on the Heart
Hospital project for Howe Electric.

L.U. 100 (c,em,i,o,rts&st), FRESNO, CABus. Mgr. Larry Kellerhals recently hired Bro. Ronny Jungk as our second organizer for the South Valley. A satellite office for Tulare, Kings County, is a possibility.

Organizer Mike Stein reported that five unfair labor practice suits have been filed against two nonunion electrical contractors, and we are awaiting a court date. Please get involvedorganize.

Local 100 congratulates Asst. Bus. Mgr. Roger Brown and extends best wishes for a long, happy and healthy retirement.

Bro. Larry Finch is the newly appointed assistant business manager, and reports the job is challenging, but rewarding.

Compliance Officer Gary Kageyama reports that central California has had five deputy labor commissioners, but now has only three. They handle prevailing wage complaints and issues. With the California freeze on state hiring, these commissioners will be facing a greater challenge until the state budget recovers.

JATC Administrator Gregg Jordan reported on an accredited entry program. With 6500 hours of previous electrical work experience, a two-year, two-night-a-week apprenticeship program will be offered. Local 100 has seen an increase of 20 percent in apprentices in the past three years.

The Executive Board has formed a union electrical workers holding company, a non-profit organization to purchase property. We now own 1.3 acres on which to build our own union hall.
