December 2002 IBEW Journal James W. Schenck Mourned
L.U. 1516 (em,i&o), JONESBORO, ARLocal 1516 mourns the death of Bro. James W. Schenck, Sr., who passed away after a massive heart attack on the job in July. Bro. Schenck was an IBEW member for just under three years, but he was a brother to the core. He had been working on the road at various locals, when on June 5, 2002, he was able to get a referral out to the Nestle Project here in Jonesboro where his son, James Schenck, Jr., was employed. Prior to his passing, he thanked the foreman for allowing him to work with his son and expressed how much that meant to him. Bro. Schenck loved the IBEW and what it stands for, and left his mark on every member he met. He was a great asset to the IBEW and Local 1516 and will be missed. Our condolences go to his family and friends. Steve Morgan, B.M. Floyd Reed Honored
L.U. 1688 (mo), PICKSTOWN, SDCongratulations to Bro. Floyd Reed, who was recently presented his 50-year service award by Vice Pres. Gary York and Fin. Sec. Greg Tanner. Bro. Reed organized the Missouri River hydroelectric dams in South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. His efforts resulted in the establishing of Local 1688, of which he is a charter member. Bro. Reed recently recalled how difficult the organizing task was, with the many long hours of travel and negotiations with managers. Bro. Reed served as the first Local 1688 president, a position he held for 20 years. After a lengthy career with the Army Corps of Engineers, Floyd and his wife, Rita, retired in the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota just outside of Rockford. The members and staff wish him and his family all the best. We are grateful for his many years of service and dedication and for the efforts leading to the establishment of our local. L.U. 2320 (t), MANCHESTER, NHIn a slugfest, the Manchester Garage knocked off the Windham Garage in the championship softball game at the second annual Benefit Tournament sponsored by the Concord Garage. The tournament raised over $2,500 to benefit Bro. Dave Forslind, whose two sons are undergoing an experimental stem cell transplant procedure for an illness called "Krabbe Disease" that affects the central nervous system and does not allow for proper nerve development. Dave and his wife, Fran, have been staying in North Carolina at Duke University Medical Center with the two boys, Mitchell (three-years old) and Kyle (one-year old). Bro. Forslind has taken an unpaid leave of absence. Thanks, to all who have dug deep for a union family in need. Anyone wishing to contribute or get updates on the boys can visit their web site at www.mitchellkyle.com. At this writing, Verizon announced layoffs and, unfortunately, over 1,000 brothers and sisters throughout New England may be on the streetsin spite of Verizon CEO Ivan Sienberg whose mega-salary and bonuses are in the excess of $350 million. Remember 1989! Get those strike funds going! There are only six months to the expiration of the contract. This company will back down because we are willing to sacrifice to keep the fruits of our labor! John Murphy, P.S. |
