Brothers on the Bay

Local 743, Reading, PA, brothers who attended the
annual fishing trip down the Chesapeake Bay.

L.U. 743 (em&i), READING, PAWe recently had our annual fishing trip down the Chesapeake Bay. The 67 attending brothers caught many fish, the biggest of which was 33 1/2 inches long, caught by Bro. Dave Singer.

Our Calpine Ontelaunee Power Plant project is winding down. The completion of these projects always come with mixed emotions. We are thankful for the employment they provided us, proud of our finished product, and sad to see the work come to an end.

Congratulations to Bros. Randy Kieffer, Mel Fishburn and Dave Paskowski on their recent appointments. Bro. Randy Kieffer was appointed an International Representative for the Third District after serving Local 743 as organizer and then as business manager. Bro. Mel Fishburn is the new business manager and Bro. Dave Paskowski is the new business agent. Best wishes to all.

David W. Paskowski, P.S.

Number One PriorityVote

house in Wauchula, FL

L.U. 915 (i&mt), TAMPA, FLThe completion of three powerhouse jobsall at one timehas put more people on Book I than ever in the history of Local 915. At present, we have well over 300 members on Book I, and this, coupled with the present Republican "trickle down" philosophy that never reached the blue-collar worker, has many members searching for employment. Yes, we are salting, but we still have many willing workers unemployed!

If ever the importance of getting involved in politics was apparent, it is definitely now. Our unemployment problem is not just a local problem; its a national one. The present government policies of altering federal requirements on construction projects, bypassing clean air standards on powerhouses, cutting funds for OSHA, NLRB and other programs that benefit all construction workers is a slap in the face.

We as labor have an obligation and a right to keep informed about political action that affects our families and us. Voting has to be number one priority for all IBEW members everywhere.

Organizing Workshop

Local 1007, Edmonton, AB, Canada, members
working in groups at the recent Organizing Workshop.

L.U. 1007 (t&u), EDMONTON, AB, CANADAIn June, 19 members participated in a two-day Organizing Workshop to explore options on how to increase our membership. The participants included two business managers and members from the Executive and Unit Boards. Members worked in random groups, sharing ideas from different perspectives, and reinforcing camaraderie among the members.

Under the guidance of First Dist. Int. Rep. Larry Schell, a mission statement was generated, as well as short and long-term goals. An action plan was also developed setting clear goals and objectives, allowing for accountability and monitoring, so evaluations can be made when circumstances change. Thanks to all who participated.

Three longtime members recently retired. They are 27-year member Doug Striker (Civic Unit), 23-year member Rudy Kosch (EPCOR Unit) and 24-year member Roy John (EPCOR Unit). Congratulations, and best of luck in your retirement.

Dale Southwood, P.S.
