Walt Griffin Mourned
L.U. 613 (em,i,o,rts&spa), ATLANTA, GAWith great sorrow we report the passing of Bro. Walter A. Griffin. Better known as Walt, he served as training director for the Atlanta Joint Apprenticeship Training Program for 40 years and was a 50-year member of the local. As our first training director, Walt was instrumental in developing a program for the local that helped set national standards. Bro. Griffin took his job as director to heart and showed this by the nurture and concern that he gave to each apprentice who came into the program. He will be greatly missed. Our local union elections were held in June by mail-in ballot. Congratulations to all elected officers. We appreciate your willingness to accept the responsibility of serving our membership. The following members have passed away since our last report: Thomas Sweeney, Jay Watson, Walter Griffin, Arthur Buffington, Leroy Hammond, A. J. Reynolds, Jr., Roy Thompson, James Talley, Alvin Brown, William Cato, Mickey Hobbs, Fred Currie, Jr., Robert Crook, Clifford Parker, H. M. Segars and William Samples. L.U. 617 (c,i,o&st), SAN MATEO, CAOur local lost two more patriarchs, retired Bro. Walter Beering, father of Bro. Chuck Beering, and retired Bro. Anthony Storti, father of Bro. Kim Storti. Our deepest sympathy and prayers go to their families. A sobering display of 617s multi-generational members! We also nearly lost Bro. Mark Gribble, our long time recording secretary to a motorcycle accident. With todays traffic, we hope that he will stick to driving his truck! Get well soon, Mark. This summers work reflected the nations economy, slow but awaiting improvement. The bright side is our contractors have accepted the fact that our "boom" of recent years is over, and they are now pursuing the infrastructure work that was the building blocks for our jurisdiction. Residential, prevailing wage, and service are now all battlefields with a new focus. L.U. 649 (i,lctt,o,rts,spa&u), ALTON, ILWe are proud to report that union officials, journeymen, apprentices, retirees and contractors continue to support and participate in the Habitat for Humanity program. Crews of volunteers meet on Saturday mornings when a house is ready for the electrical work to be completed. Our local electrical contractors donate the required tools and materials. L.U. 673 (catv,i,rts,spa,t&u), PAINESVILLE, OHAt the March 2002 Annual Building Corporation Meeting, the body approved a motion to lease the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee enough union hall property to build an 8,000 square-foot apprenticeship training facility. The new training center will include enough room for four classrooms, with a shop for hands-on pipe bonding, motor control, welding and many other apprenticeship and journeyman training programs. Congratulations to inside wiremen graduates Charles Johnson, Eric Kubish, Michael Gillick, Sean McVoy and Aaron Hanna, and to residential wiremen graduates Christopher Collins and Dennis Walker. New three-year contracts were reached with our inside contractors, our members at the Painesville Municipal Power Plant and the line crews with the City of Painesville. Special thanks to the Negotiating Committee. Craig Egeland, P.S. New Graduates and Officers Greg M. Crawford, Adam S. Gray and Alicia L. Hardacre received certificates for residential wiremen.
