Two of our Finest
L.U. 1253 (i), AUGUSTA, MEWe recently honored two of our finest, Bro. Arthur Ashmore (inside wireman) and Sister Tina Gordon (teledata), who were selected as outstanding apprentices of the year. These members should inspire us to be better at our trade, so when you see them, congratulate them.

We have a new contractor, McGuire Electric. Lets help owner Ryan McGuire be as successful as possible. We need more contractors in the Bangor area. Good Luck. Ryan!

Welcome new members Vernon Cox, Steve Thomas, John Reynolds, Jr., Tyler Poulin and Angie Knapp.

Bros. Anthony Bittues and Paul Levasseur have been chosen by their class to represent apprentices at the Executive Board meetings. It is good to see apprentices involved in the mechanics of our local.

The Public Relations Committee is working on a new web site, to include a message board, and will have different categories of discussion. Make sure you participate.

60th Anniversary

the 60th anniversary
celebration in June.

L.U. 1307 (u), SALISBURY, MDOn June 8, Local 1307 celebrated its 60th anniversary at the union hall in Delmar, MD. A lot has changed since the union began its collaboration with then Delaware Power and Light Co. Some changes include industry-restructuring, consolidation of three locals into one, company mergers and the power plant sale. Where once we dealt with one company and one contract, we now deal with four companies and five different contracts.

We had about 300 members and family attend the celebration. Several Maryland Eastern Shore delegates, Sussex County officials, and individuals from company management also attended.

Special thanks for a job well done by committee members Vice Pres. John Genga, Robert "Buzz" Gregory, Mark Derrickson and Maxine Wheatly.

If you are not contributing to COPE, please consider doing so. COPE helps support candidates that are favorable to labors position, and in todays turbulent times, we need all the friends we can get.

Lets Set the Standard
L.U. 1439 (u), ST. LOUIS, MOAt this writing, we are in the process of electing new Executive Board members. We thank the outgoing members for their time, service and commitment. We welcome those new to this position and look forward to their participation and contribution to this union heritage we carry on.

We are glad to announce the return to work of five members who were maligned and unjustly fired. The arbitrator demanded them reinstated with full back pay. Once again, the hard work of our union officers and the commitment to unity of our workforce has seen us through yet another trial.

Let us remember we are the trendsetters in society as far as work performance and ethics go. We should set the standards for others to follow.

Our work really is an expression of who we are, our autograph as it were; so lets sign each job with excellence.

Ken Carroll, P.S.

Stakes Are Clear

CIO Annual COPE
dinner.

L.U. 1501 (ees,em,mo,pet&rts), BALTIMORE, MDThe jobs of our members employed by AmTote International at Maryland racetracks are at stake. The Maryland racing industry currently contributes an estimated $800 million to $1 billion and 17,000 jobs to Marylands economy. Racing is the third largest contributor to Marylands treasury.

Bus. Mgr. Dion Guthrie has met with local, national elected officials and labor leaders requesting their support to bring slots to Maryland tracks. Marylanders are presently traveling to tracks in neighboring states where they can play the slots. These tracks are booming, with Maryland tracks and off-track betting parlors in sharp decline. The stakes are high, and we are determined to win.

As a new administration will be stepping in, I expect that this will be my last entry as press secretary. I am sure you will be notified shortly as to who my replacement will be. It has been a pleasure working with you, and I want to say thanks for all the assistance over these past few years.
