About the Human Services Department:

Our Human Services Department is dedicated to meet the diverse needs of the membership. The following outlines the many ways the HSD seeks to fulfill the IBEW mission to strengthen, organize, and serve the membership and the community at large.

HONORARY IBEW MEMBERSHIPS

The IBEW gives this prestigious honor only to individuals who have shown an exceptional cooperative spirit or whose record of service to the IBEW is extraordinary and praiseworthy. Recipients receive a Certificate of Appreciation upon approval of an Officer or Vice President.

HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS

The strength of the IBEW is in an informed, active and diverse membership. Greater opportunities now exist to organize and represent women and people of color. The HSD addresses ways to encourage greater sensitivity, awareness, participation and leadership development for all members. Training workshops for union leaders and members are available on issues affecting the changing workplace and our local unions:

  • Standing Against Sexual harassment
  • Workers with Disabilities and the ADA
  • Confronting Race and Gender Issues in the Workplace
  • Domestic/Workplace Violence
  • Women in Non traditional jobs
  • Mentoring in the 21st Century
  • Human and Civil Rights Committees
  • Women's Committees
  • Strengthening Social Security

Resource information and educational materials are available upon request.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Helping people in need is labor’s oldest tradition. The HSD works with dedicated IBEW® volunteers and the AFL-CIO to help workers suffering misfortune due to strikes, layoffs, natural disasters, and health and social problems. The HSD assists members and their communities through coordinated efforts with:

  • American Red Cross Disaster Response Network
  • Local United Way Agencies
  • Health and Human Services Agencies
  • Dollars Against Diabetes

WORK AND FAMILY

Balancing work and family is one of the greatest challenges workers face today. Workers need adequate, dependable and affordable care for dependent family members and flexible work schedules to be attentive and productive employees.

YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS

Coordinate applications for annual George Meany awards for IBEW members who have made significant contributions to scouts troops. To help youth learn about the labor movements' ’ rich history and influence, the HSD assist in the planning and sponsorship of the Girl Scouts Labor Badge and the Boy Scouts American Labor Merit Badge programs.
